    OBD1 Swaps Still... Why!?

So im still having people contact me for harnesses and whatnot still doing OBD1 swaps and still am seeing them all over the place here. Just trying to figure out what the wholeistic why is?!
If you have an M50/S50 alright cool, but the OBD2 motors?!

All i see from OBD1 swaps is VSS issues, Idle issues, O2 sensor backfeed BS, knock sensors turning to dust, crank sensors dying every 5 min, random no start for no reason issues, etc

Were a growing community thats advancing forward. Weve got M60/M62 swaps going now, M54 swaps, S54 swaps etc. So why are we still going backwards in technology. The Bosch ECU used on the OBD1 cars is an advanced version of the Motronic 1.0/1.1 used in E30s. BMW dropped the Bosch ECU nearly all together in 96 for this very reason! Old technology!. Think about your computer. For you computer guys, what if you took your Core I7 and threw a P4 in there? Why would you think of doing such a thing!
Ive yet to have an OBD2 24v swap come through here that didnt start on the first try, and didnt run perfect within a hour or two of ironing out all the little BS kinks. What am i missing? :D

    :dunno

Because almost every build thread on r3v is OBDI. Lots of OBDI documented stuff...Maybe???

If I was looking at an S52, I would keep the OBDII stuff. But I found a good deal on an S50 so it looks like OBDI is calling my name.

        That must be it.

Maybe I read it wrong or I'm misunderstanding, are you asking why people are still doing M50/S50 swaps, and not the newer, more advanced M54/S54/M60?

          OBD1>All

On the other hand, not a lot of people have the money to upgrade to s52/s54/m60. M50/S50 are cheaper

No he's asking why people are converting M52s and S52s to OBDI. I think it's because the lack of OBD2 information though. Even though you don't need anything special, only differences are the ECU and its tune, and the OBDI manifold swap if you take that route I'm pretty sure.

+1 on the lack of info.

Oops. Sorry, shoulda clarified. Yes im talking about why were back converting M52s/S52s. Not doing more S52/M60/etc swaps lol. Thats a hole different box of worms hahah

If you're so passionate about getting people do to OBD2 swaps then write a complete comprehensive DIY guide on how to do it. There's a big lack of info out there, and what little info there is, is scattered about in random build threads and threads in this forum which make it impossible to search for.
If you want people to do OBD2 swaps then do that and and make it a sticky, not make rant threads like this. There's still many missing pieces, the big things well known, like just send the ecu to get flashed by someone like you, but what's missing is the little intricacies of it that will inevitably come up during the swap that you didn't think of.

                        Gentrification.

I'm confused. Even e36 guys still convert to OBD 1.

I have an old school built engine. I like the novelty of it.

Besides having the less nice aspects flashed out of the DME (EWS, secondary air pump, etc.) And a temp sensor I don't know what else is different than the average 24v swap. The reason OBD1 backdated on newer motors was popular before was that flash tuning wasn't as accessable. Now that isn't the case but people still downgrade their engines because that's what has always been done.

Only really stupid ones, or ones putting an SS2 in an OBD1 car. You only lose when you backconvert.

While you probably could retrofit an OBD1 E36 to OBD2, it hasn't been done as far as I'm aware.

                              328junkie did it... third one I believe. Wasn't a E36 particularly but a S50 to OBD2.

I went with OBD1 on my M52 swap as I was missing all the OBD2 sensors and ECU already, so it was easier for me to go OBD1, and cheaper as my friend is a tuner and he made me a custom tune, going on the dyno eventually with him to fine tune it. A lot easier then flashing IMO.
