I found a Nissen from a e36 4cylinder in great condition (ltsted for leak) at the junkyard for $30. I'm planning to run this

Granted, I have to run my fan on high to keep temps down but I don't know how you would have a problem with a bigger fan in a pulling position.

Do you have your fan hooked up to the thermal switch on the radiator?
I don't have it hooked up to the switch, I manually turn it on via the a/c button. I realize I don't have "high" this way, but I can imagine how rough the engine would idle if I did run it on a higher voltage.

I run the very typical SPAL 16 inch "slim" fan mounted on some of Massive's brackets modified to fit the narrower M42 radiator. I think they're only 1" thick?
