California BAR inspection, 4 cylinder to 6 cylinder?

I have been toying with the idea of putting a 6 cylinder in my 318is. I never thought I would want to get rid of the m42, but I have been thinking about it.

Does the California BAR inspection require engine to be the same number of cylinders, or will I be fine jumping to a 6 cylinder? Has anyone managed to pass with an s54?

S54 will be a LOT of work. You need all emisions equipment from the car that it came out of. S50/S52 is possible, but again you need all the emissions equipment from the motor you are swapping in. Im building a M52, but going to run it on OBD1 and BAR it as a 93 M50 vanos motor

nothing is impossible if your pockets are deep enough. it would take a lot of extra work, but its possible

No such req. Many have passed, I passed going from m10 to m30.

Now, S54 would be a different story. Google BAR and you'll be able to read all that's required.
