do you have the CEL wired up?

The check engine function of the DME will tell you something if its all wired up; it could be a sensor with long wire lead has broken insulation inside (happens to 24v cam position sensors and some others)
Car was not equipped with CEL from factory (poverty spec 318t and I neglected to wire one in. Ive used the Peake tool to pull limited codes, and all I got were things that I had disconnected messing with things.

It gets a little better, but still not right.

Guess this fuel pressure gauge wasn't a complete waste of money, though. Now it does this:

Time to wire in a simple led light to be your CEL.

Cheaper to have a check engine light than to throw parts at a problem and not fix it.

*****CEL is the best tool ever****

My s52 obd2 had an angry start issue late last week; pulled code and showed camshaft sensor error.

Unplugged cam sensor and pulled rubber boot off; insulation of wires was doneski. Drove with it unplugged and it was much happier

Order new sensor and installed yesterday; car is back to 100%.

            Thursday problem-> saturday solved
            OBD1 M54/M52TU swap as a M50b25

You're right, that is the proper way to do this. I will work on that when it is not raining here.

Would the code reader not give me the same info, just without the benefit of notifying me when there is a problem?

Also, I found that the crank sensor retaining bolt was stripped and not holding it in properly. I'm going to have to use some sort or damaged bolt remover to get it out and replace it. I could move it around some and it ran differently/didn't run depending on how I wiggled it around, so I'm sure that's doing nothing for me.

Unplug the sensor until you can fix it. It will run fine without it.

Dude, You need to fix this first.

What is your fuel system right now? Tell me what is in your tank, was in your tank, what fuel pumps you are using, frame rail pump? pulse dampener?, fuel sock, so on. you have a serious problem with the fuel pressure
Looking for late model fogs, E39 Fog lights, cool cheap 17 5x120 wheels.

I thought you were talking about the cam sensor!

no, it will definitely not run without a crank sensor. you need to fix that before you can drive it.

Yeah, I was going to say, I though that's all that the DME really used to start the car running. I'm going to get at it when the weather is nicer and get that sorted first.

Borrowing an angle drill and stubby drill bits, going to CAREFULLY try to get it to the point I can use an easy out on the locating bolt. I snapped the head off trying to get it in correctly/tight.
