    Speed signal goes from diff to cluster to DME. follow the wires. Thecsignal from the diff is close enough to what the DME needs that you can wir it directly from the diff to the DME.

      okay so i need to trace the wire from the diff to the cluster...any idea what colour on the 86 model? bearing in mind that i did NOT have a c101, i had the old rectangular body plug. I did have cruise control b4 as my car was automatic....
      do i connect the wire directly to the dme? cut the wire completely from the dme and connect or bridge the wire?

        i would use the speed signal output from speedo

        plugs on back of cluster
        c1 = blue 26 pin
        c2 = white 26 pin
        c3 = yellow

        for an 86 e30 (usa car... not sure if s.a. is different, but at least it will give you the idea.) brown wire / red stripe = br/rd
        c2 p12 br/rd - speed signal input from diff to speedo
        c3 p26 br/rd - speed signal output from speedo to obc
        c6 bu/yl - speed signal output from speedo to cruise

        additional info from searching....

          Thanks, one more question..... is it sufficient to connect the wire from the cluster to the DME or must i connect another wire onto the X20 as well?

            If you get it to the correct pin it will work. But its just as easy to run a wire threw the body harness hole in the firewall to the x20.

              okay, so i connected the wire from the cluster that goes to the obc directly to the dme - pin 42 - vehicle speed sensor.... will test it later, will the rev go up to 1000rpm if i select neutral while coasting?

                i took the car out tonight to check ..... its behaved so far and noticed that when i drive and put the car in neutral and let it roll it DOES lift the idle a bit but its only noticible when i stop and it drops back to normal, it also does it in reverse...

                is this normal and is my problem sorted?????

                        what was the chassis / cluster originally from? 318?

                        if so, replace coding plug on cluster to an 325i coding plug.

                          My car was an 86' 320i, but does not have the coding plug, not even a socket to add the plug, you see i also added the OBC, it didnt have one...

                            The coding plug might be at the back of the cluster (in the tach area) in a shape of a black "pin" that pulls out since it sound like you have an early cluster.
