Im fairly certain this is correct but never hurts to ask. 12/29/86 production 325i going to obd1 m52.

 If you know how to solder properly, and you plan on shrink wrapping all the joints, I'd do it. It'll be a long lasting reliable connection.Dumpster Fire PilotComment

 Soldering was never meant for automotive applications... Look through your car and find a "factory" solder point... Only one youll find is on a circuit board or to supplement a crimp. HVAC and and some industrial applications can use it very reliably because of lack of extreme climate change, vibrations, etc.
