So I pulled an m50tu from a junkyward car yesterday. I have never so much as changed the oil on an e36 before so it took a little longer than expected. We had the motor on the hoist about 5 feet off the ground and were trying to move the stand so we could back the truck up to it. Then the junkyard manager, who was trying to help, decides hes gonna yank the hoist as hard as he can to move it. Well the motor decides to slip off the chains and fall those 5 feet to the ground. Valve cover is definately fucked and 2 of the coils are as well. How much is this going to cost me? Do you think any of the engine internals are fucked up as well or should it be fine?

Shouldn't cost you a damn thing especially if it was his fault!
If it fell on the valve cover, I would check the headbolts to see if maybe the fall too much stress on the head...Recent Rebranding!!

Well I don't know how to approach him about it. He was a nice guy and said we could pull anything off the car if we wanted. My main concern is wether the motor is fucked up or not.

definately pull the valve cover off and make sure the cams were not near the impact. it doesnt take much and they will crack, i have seen a few take a fall from only a few feet while being caried and break in half. if theyre ok i would do the headgasket and replace the bolts. just tell him straight, you paid for a good motor, he dropped it, now he needs to square up on a deal for you. if not tell him you want a 6 month warranty on it.

Make sure the engine turns evenly. Take off the valve cover and look for any damage in the valvetrain. Look for any sort of cracks in the cast aluminum parts (head, oil filter housing, timing cover, etc.)San Diego BMW repair -> Jake @ www.littlecarshop.com Great guy

The chain was wrapped around the motor mounts. It looks fine although I will need to replace the valve cover and 2 of the coils. I went back to the yard today and he said I could take anything I wanted off of any of the cars so I left with about 500 bucks worth of extra stuff. If by chance the motor is fucked up, which I dont think it is, I will sell all the parts I got and the parts off the motor and make more than I paid for the stuff. Im not as pissed anymore.
