I keep perusing craigslist, local forums, etc. I hardly ever find a 24v motor suitable for a swap, and when I do, they usually want a stupid amount for it like $1,500 for a non vanos m50...Where are people finding motors from for a reasonable price?

I have a couple 24v's I can let go cheap if you are local, or can travel to Broward county. A '94 m50b25tu minus intake manifold still in the car, '98 m52b25 that needs a head gasket, m50b25tu that is just dirty inside (ran when pulled, wouldn't trust just putting in), an m50nv long block, also have wiring harnesses DME's etc (OBD1&2), e36 mount arms, but no e34 oil pans. We just don't advertise this stuff - best to email John(at)WOT-Tech(dot)com.

Ironically enough, I took a look as some have suggested at getting a donor car and pulling a motor myself, and yeah, that looks to be a better option as well. Especially since you could potentially sell off other parts and probably get some for scrap as well...

One place you don't want to get a motor from is junk yard (or PNP) from a car that isn't totaled. That means the repair bill for (most likely the motor) was more then the car is worth. They will gladly sell you the motor, even if it's junk.
I prefer motors that were attached to automatic transitions. It's just been less stress on the motor IMHO. When was the last time red-lining a motor with an auto tranny was fun? Almost never.Last edited by george graves; 11-15-2016, 06:06 AM.Originally posted by Matt-Bhey does anyone know anyone who gets upset and makes electronics?

I snatched my S52 from a junkyard years ago.
They pop up every now and again. Just have to remain diligent in your search. My previous build (currently E30-less)

Pulled my M52b28 from a '98 E39 528i.
This isn't ideal, as you still need E36 motor arms and an E36 driveshaft (or adapter).
I have yet to do anything with mine. It's been sitting in the garage on some old tires for two years.
After I sold the E39 shell, I'm only out $300 for the M52b28 and ZF320.

Picked up a 96 328i for $650 towed to the house. 150,000 miles... 5spd, runs and drives. Has really bad hubs & bearings in the rear. PO's kid didn't want to fix and decided he wanted a truck. Sooooo... worked out for both of us. Will pull the drivetrain (almost out actually) and sell the rest of the car. Should end up being a $350ish engine/trans.
Found it on CL after searching for 6 months. Just have to be patient. I second George... wouldn't pull a motor at PnP unless car was wrecked. Even then maybe not. I like to see/hear something running before buying."A good memory for quotes combined with a poor memory for attribution can lead to a false sense of originality."
