      Are you talking about RTV Silicon or something else like Permetex High-tack? Last time I checked RTV is good for small things like vacuum hoses but usually breaks down when it's constantly in contact with oil.

        I thought about the shifter seal. I replaced that when it was all apart. If mine still leaks, I will run it on a lift and watch. If it ends up to be leaking out of the shifter seal, I will cry

          I'm not sure exactly what it is. I would hit the store and start reading some labels. Find something that is flexible, can handle high temps, and is designed to be used with petrolium products.

          The stuff I have is in a pink tube, comes out like a purple sticky goo, and stinks like hell. I have had it for 15+ years and use it for everything from sealing thermostat housings to rear differential covers to installing on the back of brake pads for anti squeal. I don't know exactly what it is because the label has been worn off due to being kicked around the garage for 15 years.

            I tried that with mine last time. I ran it (with the driveshaft disconnected) for 30 min up on jackstands........everything looked good. It didn't leak a drop. I hooked the driveshaft back up, drove it to work the next day, and it was puking oil everywhere.

            I'm wondering if it is too much play in the driveshaft that is causing mine. I don't have any weird vibrations or anything, but my center support bearing on my driveshaft doesn't exactly look 100%. I'm really reaching here, but I'm getting really tired of fighting this. I just want to drive my car again.

              I wonder if maybe the sealer you are using is the problem. Most techs I've talked to said that it's best to oil the seal up with gear oil or grease to help the seal get seated. There's a possibility that whatever you are using is keeping it from properly seating against the flange.

                I didn't use the sealer the first two times. I only used it after I read it in the Bentley that you are SUPPOSED to use it. The sealer should never touch the seal though......its not for that. The sealer goes on the flange. It is supposed to seal the front of the flange tight against the inner race of the rear transmission bearing so the tranny oil can't seep up the splines and out past the nut that is holding the flange on.

                  OIC Now.

                  Does it go on the inside of the splines, the outside of the flange or both?

                    Neither......it is supposed to go on the front of the flange......the part that mates up against the inner race of the rear transmission bearing.

                    Maybe this will help. It goes on the very front edge of #17 (the edge facing the front of the car), and then that front edge gets mated up against the inner race of #14.

                    That should seal off the splines from the rest of the tranny. Of course if you are leaking from between the flange and seal.......then that is a different problem. I have so much oil getting thrown around, I have been having trouble figuring out where it is coming from.

                      It worked... I used two seals and its not leaking anymore. I definitly want to find out why it was leaking though and fix that, but This is working for now. I will get the part number on the seals I used. the bmw ones are two big, but the other ones you can fit two in.

                        Sweet.....hook me up. It seriously might just be that the flange is 20 years old and doesn't want to mate up to a new seal anymore. I just didn't want to take a $100 gamble on fixing it. I don't mind working on my 325es, but I HATE spending money on it.

                          no go, Its still leaking. It seems alot better though. Going to be ripping it back apart I guess.:(

                            ugh, that sucks. Sounds like you ended up like me. Every time I get it all back together, I take it for a quick 10 min drive and everything looks great. Then I drive it to work the next day (120 miles round trip) and it starts throwing oil out everywhere.

                              2 weeks after replacing the seal in the ZF tranny all is well. Used for daily driving 5-6 days a week.

                              What I did find was that there was some play in the flange even after tightening it all the way so I threw in a couple copper crush washers and tightened it good and used a little blue loctite on the nut since using the lockwasher was out of the question.

                              So far not a drop. My advice to everyone is to make sure there is no play in the flange because it can cause it slip back and forth a small amount breaking the seal.
