yes, i also do get very tired of driving the car to and from work every day (lot's of noises, lack of smoothness)

.. but i really appreciated the car at the track school last weekend and my instructor with a e36 race car actually complemented my e30.
so yea, i think that if one can afford to have another DD and still keep the converted e30 for track days, then it's totally worth it - otherwise it's one big compromise.

anyone brave enough to add up all the costs associated with having a converted e30?
i just did mine and came up close to $18Gs and i am not even boosted (i bought the e30 in it's stock form for $2100), talk about obsession. No way i am getting anymore than half that if i decide to sell.
So now i have to spend even more to add another muffler, a cat and get rid of the lightweight flywheel.

I'm at around $11K right now including the donor car, and I still need to add an IS lip, IS sideskirts, get new tires, do a shit ton of body work, get sport seats, etc. That might add up to around 2-3K to get it to where I want it.

Why are you ditching the lightweight flywheel? Gear rattle?

yea, and lots of it. I am using JB racing solid alu wheel with stock unsprung M3 clutch. I get clunks galore at low speed shifting, super diesel chatter at idle and the worst: shitload of whining, vibrations and loud buzz between 2 and 3.5krpm (esp in higher gears, high load). The only rpm range that the car sounds graceful is 4+krpm, but then it's pretty loud with my straight through exhaust (5x11x22 magnaflow at the end no less and 22" resonator).

so yea, not the most sophisticated car. I've added lots of soundproofing over the winter (Raammat and ensolite on top - the whole interior), but that resulted in minimal improvement.
So i am considering either the steel UUC 16.9# fly with M5 clutch or just a stock heavy flywheel with the existing clutch.

i really do think i can find the way to love my car, but only if most of these noises are gone. (i know earplugs is a cheap solution but not a very practical one)

What downpipe are you using? I'm using a OBD-I downpipe, E28 M5 mounts on both sides, and around 6mm spacers on the right engine mount, and it rattles like crazy on my M50 swap. This is because the exhaust is touching both the swaybar and the right CAB lollipop, and I haven't bypassed pin 13 yet (the M50 swap has the backfeed problem, but the S50 doesn't).

I plan on addressing this problem this weekend, because on my S50 swap, I used the same downpipe and there are no in-cabin rattles and it has great idle behavior. I'm also running software that bumps up the idle speed for a lightweight flywheel, but I'm using the stock S50 dual mass. Also, I have a little more spacing on the right engine mount, and I'm using Treehouse CABs.

Why did you space the engine mount?

I'm running E28 M5 mounts with my M52 and no spacers, no problems....

i have a full custom exhaust, so nothing is touching. I've even experimented with a heatwrap to wrap my downpipes to see if it's the downpipe that resonates and produces that 2-3krpm rattle at high load - no difference.
I have two 2.25 crush bent pipes going from the ends of obd1 manifolds, then merging in a not-so-smooth custom merge into the mandrel bent single 2.5 further on. I am thinking that perhaps those 2.25 downpipes introduce an expansion chamber for gases coming out from less then 2" ID manifolds - i really don't know. Even when i had the stock e36m3 muffler (magnaflow cat though), exhaust note was quieter but the loud rattle at 2-3krpm in high gear high load was still there.
I really want to redo the downpipe with dual mandrel 2" pipes merging at a Burns 2-1 Y merge - this might help.

it idles great, and when i rev up with engine disconnected from the driveline, the exhaust noise is very smooth and quiet - but as soon as engine gets connected to the driveline - noises increase tenfold. The worst thing is that i have a great difficulty to tell whether those are exhaust noises or the driveline vibrations reaching my ear through the sheetmetal. Also it could be that vibrations in the driveline somehow affect the valvetrain through the chains (my tensioners are old too), valves and ultimately the exhaust gas when it's coming out and all this results in weird exhaust noise - who knows.

The downpipe doesn't clear the subframe if you retain the stock exhaust studs, so that's why I spaced mine up a bit.

Static, man, that's a weird vibration / sound issue you're having. Yeah a Burns Y-pipe would be SWEET, but expensive as hell!

ryan, what downpipes are you running? my exhaust is custom made, so it clears the sway bar nicely.

i'm in that deep to. i'll have to part my car if i ever want to see any of that money again... but i don't plan on ever selling it.

btw, i'm running a UUC 8.5# w/ m5 clutch with almost 0 rattle at idle. its a great flywheel.

you guys are a bunch of freaking girls. Seriously, go buy hondas if you want quiet, smooth cars. I ran my 74 2002 open header with no soundproofing, stereo or AC for months. You queers have s50 e30s and are complaining about a little noise and lack of smoothness? add a ton of fat mat, a ton of weight, and some boges if you really want to cry about it. e36's are crap.

                      Quiet. Men are speaking.

An m10 on open headers sounds like quarters jangling in your pocket anyway.

HAHAHAHAHAHA. J/k. I think the problem is that static is experiencing NVH that is above and beyond what the car had in the first place with its original engine.

dude that m10 was beastly. I had dual weber 45 side drafts on it at the time.

I forgot to mention it had all poly mounts too. Probably about the harshest loudest ride you could experience. not to mention i smelled like gas when i got out of it.
