I know this is an old thread but for what it's worth you can reflash the MS43 DME to european 2 specs which deletes the secondary air pump (BMW sells a block off plate for the sap valve) and the post cat 02' sensors, DMTL pump among a few other things. additionally the ews can be coded out so you can start the car without pressing in the clutch for example using NCS expert. Also you can literally use the entire harness, and instrument cluster, necessary modules, out of the e46 in the e30 to include DBW, fully functional VANOS, OBDII, and DISA without cutting into anything.

The only piece that will need to be adapted or fabricated are the clutch switches for the cruise control to work and also to let the engine know when you are trying to shift so it can bring the rev's down fast enough.

After that bit is sorted out I can honestly say it's plug and play.

If anyone is interested in how to do the above just let me know and ill get something written up.

Once you have flashed the car to european 2 specs without catalytic converters you can use DIS to fine tune the idle fuel mixture.

This is only possible with pre '03 M54B30's since sometime after 2003 they switched to MS45 DME's.

This may be the route I'll be going in a few years with an e30. love the m54b30 engine just not the e46.

That all sounds great, and I follow what your saying, but in the end I thought it was easier to just run the motor on a 413 ECU as OBD1.

No prob. If anyone near me wants to give it a try and fully swap an ms43 m54b30 engine into their e30 let me know. I'll help out with the coding and electric side of things.
