    I'm the potential buyer of this car so I want to get this thing to pass! I've given up once on my previous E30 but just some time and $ this should work.

        sell it in canada ive seen e30 m50's go between 7-13,000$ depending on the condition. plus only a few places here test for emissions. just my 2 cents.

          Don't only OBDII cars have air pumps/air injection? WTF was that dude smoking when he said "missing"? And wtf is with him saying "missing - wiring to sensors," what sensors? Also, on the check light, just pull the wire that turns on the light on the dash (for the test).

            I was a bit confused on that too...not to mention the CEL wasn't on when I drove the car this past weekend.

              problem is once you've gone to the ref once, you need to pass smog with the ref, so shady shops aren't an option for the initial smog post swap (IIRC)

                    why did u take it to a referree in the first place? i would just take off the plastic engine covers, and drive to any smog station and act like its all stock...

                          If you are using a s52 block (obd 2 engine) then the ref will register the engine as a obd 2 car. Just because you have a obd1 harness on the car doesn't mean you can smog the car as 1. They read the engine serial number and they know what it came out of. If it was legal to put on older fuel delivery than what came on the engine then I'd be running side draft carbs. If the block came with OBD II then that it what you have to have to make it legal. And at this point its a bad idea to try a magic smog because there is a good chance that they will check out the smog station that passes you, and thats if you get one to do it after your previous smog check. You're pretty much in a hole. Putting on a bunch or s50 parts is a waste of time/money.

                            There's no vin tag the guy can see. So he tested it as an S50.
                            There's no way for him to tell except for the fact he saw the OBDII manifold and airpump parts. That was my fault since I thought it was a bit more lenient.

                            As far as the check engine light goes, it works. The idiot didn't seem to accept the fact that it was a check engine light because it didn't say "Check Engine." He insisted I take apart the cluster and get a sharpee to label it.

                              By law the serial number has to be cast into the block and by law he has to look at it. It doesn't matter if there is a vin tag or not. And he was probably having a shitty day about the check engine light thing, thats BS. Either way, he goes off of the cast-in serial number.
