id like to thank TJ Lathrop (digitalwave) for telling me how to bypass the starter relay (which blew my #10 fuse) AND checking all my fuses and telling me they were good.
the starter now spins but doesnt engage to the flywheel. i really hope that i dont need to take the plenum off to get to the starter. sounds like it could be backwards but i dont think i would do that! does anyone use spacers on the starter when mounting it?Comment

hmm, i would have never thought of that, I didnt know your car was an auto. As for the starter, sounds like the pull in isnt working. Which flywheel/clutch combo are you using? Im using m50 starter, s50 flywheel and clutch and my starter makes a horrible noise when I turn the engine over (e30 transmission). I tried to use spacers on the starter and it did nothing.
Im going to be swapping for an m20 starter, flywheel and clutch.Old and improved:

it does spin by hand. Im using the M20 starter, clutch and flywheel. im thinking that the flipout selonoid is bad. ill have to change to another starter.Comment
