mike, it will run for a short period of time without the fpr as i can tell you from experience. assuming you are running an obd2 manifold, you have three choices. you can cut into your e30 fuel lines and just install the factory fpr under the body, install an obd1 fuel injector rail with fpr, or you can go with an aftermarket fpr. if you wish to install the factory obd2 fpr, you can look at my swap thread as i have mentioned it there and posted a photo.

so if you use to run a fpr under the body, would that hose off the intake still have to run to the fpr? i have an obd1 s52 sitting in my e30 m3 right now but i have not reached the fuel line issue yet, but its coming up, and i just noticed the lack of fpr on and around my fuel lines.

Trace the feed back to the fuel filter to be sure. Feed goes to the front.

That's the thing, I had the fuel filter and everything else pulled completely out of the engine bay.

After getting under the car and tracing it back, I can assume that the line coming FROM the pump on the underside of the car running to the engine bay is the feed, right?

And the vapor/charcoal vent is the one that runs back, and up onto the top of the tank?

Fuel filter is towards the back of the car.

Whatever line goes to the fuel filter, is your feed. It should go Tank -> filter -> fuel rail. If obd2, it the FTP will have a through section for this feed.

Whatever line goes to the tank is your return. This line should have the FPR on it. Goes Fuel Rain -> FPR -> Tank

The cannister is like a vent for the tank. It does go to the tank, but it is NOT a feed or return. One side of the cannister should go to the intake manifold (through a solenoid valve usually), and the other end straight to the tank. NOT to be mistaken with fuel return.

I have a fuel filter in my engine bay, right on the driver's side strut tower.

I making sure I have the lines down at the frame correctly hooked up, so whichever one goes to the fuel filter in the engine bay won't help me, that's what I'm trying to determine.

Right now, what I have hooked up to the vapor line is the hardline running under the car, separate from the other 2, and it runs up along the side of and up onto the top of the tank.

The other one, which I have hooked up as the feed, runs to the external fuel pump under the car in front of the driver's side wheel well.

If I have those 2 correct, then I'm good.

any reason why you have the filter there?

in any case, you want the feed to be whatever comes from the fuel pump, to the filter, to the fuel rail. so yes you are god.

That is the stock location for the fuel filter on early cars.

I'm actually going to relocate it to the rear of the car. Just found a great little write up by a guy that did the same, just by bending and shaping the existing filter bracket a little to fit under the car. One more thing out of the engine bay!

I like pics to help others later on.

From this post it would appear

                            2 is feed
                            3 is return

I have to make soft lines up and havent crawled under the car but should all be same orientation right?

With that being said would the front part of fuel rail(radiator) and back be return(firewall). Every car Ive come across uses return as a regulator.
