NO SPARK, Need some help please.

Ok lets start with what I have.
    I have a 91 318is and a 95 525i M50 from a automatic e34. I got everything installed but no spark.
When I hook up the battery all the lights along the bottom of the cluster come on.
I used the AKG adapter to hook everything up.
Here is some photos of what I have questions about.

This is the harness that connects into the M42 ECU. I dont have the small plug on the M50 harness so where do I splice these 2 wires in and what do they do??

This plug here is for the MAF but I have one under the intake thats not plugged in to anything and I cant really see where it goes or find out what its for since I wasnt the only one taking the motor out.

This is connected in with the harness. Once again I dont know if I need to connect anything to it or now.

    Does everything here look correct?

ok now when we took the m50 out the starter was still connected to the block with all the wires. There was 2 big wires that are + correct?
and then there was 2 smaller wires.
one connects on one side of the starter and one connects on the other side of the starter.
When I got the M20 starter since I used the single mass M20 flywheels.
There was a prong for the 2 bigger wires and one prong for one of the smaller wires. but no prong for the other smaller wire. So can I just put a bigger end on it and connect it with the other smaller wire??

This is the way she sits with the motor...
I JUST WANT TO DRIVE THE FUCKIN THING!!!! :hitler:

Still waiting on my cage to come then I can make brackets for my seats.

Wait, i dont get it... Your using the M42 ecu on a m50?

Your first question, theres about 50 wires. which two are you talking about.

If i were you and im understanding this correctly (lol) you should really go buy a e36 or e34 engine wiring harness AND ecu from the same car and use that. stop splicing wires and cutting things up. All you need to do if you have the e36 harness and ecu is plug it in, give it power/ground and hook up the starter correctly.

      read what I wrote.
Theres only one small plug with 2 wires in the photo. I dont have that plug on my M50 harness so I need to know where to splice that plug into the M50 harness so that what ever it was connected to works correct.

            Nice job Mike!

I'm glad you got it working! I really don't know what that little plug on your ecu thing is though?

You didnt have that plug on yours???
I think all e30's have this plug..I dont know.
I got to figure out what its for and where to hook it up now.
The thing I need to fix the most is why the idle jumps up and down..

                Sorry for that...

I had that plug i think. Its in the glove box right? I never hooked it up to anything on the engine harness. Everything seems to work fine (its been running for about a year)

                Congrats!

hmm, i looked at mine today and I do have that plug. How Ironic?

it had a foam cover in it like it hasn't been used before?

Inside of mine has 2 terminals, 1 positive and one negative. I wonder what it could be.

Well I got the starter wire taken care of with a new starter that showed up today.
I dont know what the wires for since I didnt put the starter in yet.
I did notice when using the M42 tranny and the 260 shift linkage that the shifter sits up towards the front of the car more.
Good thing I have the short shifter because it doesnt hit the metal.
I got the e36 throttle cable and new exhaust gaskets coming Thursday, should be driving it this weekend if I fix the idle problem. :(

Mike, what exact ECU are you using, I don't understand?

Also, check for vac leaks, that could be your culprit. Do you have the ICV plugged into the right wire? What is the cond of your ICV?

Those are the few things I would check, then go from there. How bad does your idle jump though? Do you think it could be the OBD-1 doing it's thing? Usually if you disconnect the battery on obd1 cars they like to idle shitty for the first 15-30 minutes.

Im using the red lable 413 ecu.
I didnt unhook anything from the motor other then what I had to.
I havent had a chance to check the ICV yet. I havent let the car run any longer then 60 seconds.
I forgot I didnt have the exhaust mani tight on the back side and it burnt out one of my gaskets so Im waiting on some new ones.

Where is everyone putting there ECU's??
Mine wires are not long enought to fit in stock location.
Im thinking of making something for it to sit in like it does on the E34's.

that's weird, my wires seem more then long enough to fit.

e34 wiring harness are shorter then the e36 ones. I don't know people with e34 wiring harnesses mount there ecu's. I would be hesitant to mount it in the engine bay though.

You're runnign an M20flywheel? Ive heard the difference in weight is enough to cause the idle problems. Light flywleel motors tend to always hunt around, Since the system is alot lighter the ICV over-corrects and ends up floating around the ideal idle. It seems plausible depending on how the controller works. However, this is somethig I have heard from several people but not tried yet (anyone care to comment?). I am still yet to get my exhaust on (from headers-back); That also makes for a rough idle!!!
