The relays are, but the wiring and fuses might not be. I think the low speed fuse is 8.5 amps, not a big deal to swap out for a 10a or 15a, but I'd rather use the high speed circuit rather than worry about burning up some wiring and overheating my car. :)

If the wires are the same gauge, which I am almost positive they are, I will then just up the fuse rating like you said. I'll post pics and stuff eventually.

I suspect both of the relays are the same for the high/low speed. I will check later though; the wires coming to the fan from the relay box are equal in gauge it seems. My new fan is only a 10 amp draw anyhow. I will definitely take another look today before I tear into it.

if you are going to bypass the resistor, I would wire it so only the high speed comes on - I'm not sure the low speed circuit can handle the current draw. 13amps has been no problem for my high speed circuit though (I carry spare relays too).

Part numbers for the thermostats, via WorldPac:

71 degree: 11 53 1 466 174/71

Part numbers for the radiator-mounted thermo (temp) switches (aka Aux Fan Switch):

91/99 degree (stock on late model E30, 3-pole @ top-right of radiator): 61 31 1 378 073

80/88 degree (from E36/M42 motor apparently, same connector as late model E30): 61 31 8 361 787

SIDE NOTE:

I am doing similar mods this week, and I am putting a SPAL 16" Puller fan in on the engine side, mounted to the fan shroud somehow. I am going to wire it to the LOW speed power for the aux elctric fan, but I will bypass the resistor. I will let you guys know how she runs on some hot days. I have the 80 degree thermostat but the lower temp fan switch.

so i was in traffic yesterday with 99deg heat wave, and with my electric fan on and the above mods, my car almost made it to the half-way mark.

Yea, but I think carbon fiber lets more heat through... :p

I have a 14" Spal with the Understeer kit. It pretty much has to kick on whenever I come to a stop, and the needle does creep up a bit.

Have not taken my e30 out into the heat wave yet...

Nah, you have to have the elctric fan. It really barely ever comes on though.

Basic, but what temp does the standard T-stat switch at? Is this mod OK in summer traffic? Does anyone keep the original AC rad and electric fan with this combo?

I have a nice Spal on the front of the radiator wired in to the stock wiring. It comes on by itself as needed. :)

In my 318 rad i used the 75* t-stat, 80/88 switch and water wetter. Works great.

I'm also running no fan with the 75* temp t-stat, Water Wetter and lower temp 80c e36 318i aux fan temp switch. I also used the stock aux fan without the a/c condensor. So I had to mount them using euro brackets.
