Another newb my car doesnt start thread.

    Hey,
    Weve got a e34 vanos M50 (1993) into a 1990 e30 325. Using the e30 starter wires on the e30 starter cause its on the e30 getrag.

All using Addissimos wiring chart (i know i know. send me the ETM and ill figure out the adapter.)

Were not getting any voltage to the unloader, fuel pump or o2 heater relays. Starter doesnt turn either.

Wondering what the brown/yellow wire coming out of the main harness goes to.

Any suggestions for troubleshooting or what we may have done wrong.

    Thanks so much
    Dan

There should be a switch wire that goes to the starter/O2/fuel pump from the main harness. I forget which one it is, I think it might be purple/green but I'm not sure. I don't think the starter wire has anything to do with the relays so I think you can assume your relays are good.

        Status: HG repair. 488wtq though!

I know on my car (non-vanos) theres a red wire coming out of the main harness but its not the starter wires its way smaller. Theres the one red and i beleive one brown. On Dans, theres no power wire to the harness.

I checked voltage to all the pins on the relays and theres nothing. With the key on there should be at least a hot wire for the unloader no? I was under the impression there should be hot wire to at least the fuel pump and unloader relays...

We'll have to do some more research. Its been a while since i did mine...

Yes, in run and start 86 is hot on both K5 and K7.

Vanos or non-Vanos, the power wires are the same. One to the positive junction block, a smaller power wire, and a ground. How is the E30 power box wired up? There should be a cable with two smaller lugs that fit onto the 325i power block. How is the starter wired up?

Using the ETM you can pretty much test out all the pins in the diagnostic connector to see where you're not getting power, so you can narrow it down further.

Again... That link to all the ETM's is friggin awesome... Such a great source. I really appreciate that one.

Thats good to know. Basically we have the e30 starter wire. From the terminal in the engine bay to the starter. That one didnt even get taken out of the car. :)

The only things im wondering about with the main power is the fact that theres nothing from the engine harness hooked up to it besides the starter wire. I dont know if thats just cause the e30 starter wires were used...

Dan said he has a diagnostic reader or something and it would pwer up but it wouldnt talk to the dme for some reason. idk what that means haha...

Ok so we made alot of progress tonight, we got it to crank, it turned out it was a bad starter, but still no power to the relays buy the DME, Unloader, fuel etc. THeres no power until you unplug the DME once its unpluged you get 12v to the relays, once its plugged in nada?!?!? this is very strange, i have gone over my c101 4 times as well to make sure its wired right, any imput would be greatly apperciated

So it was the starter. ;)

Did you over check the Postives and grounds?

The two grounds that were hooked up to the firewall were moved to the ground point on the battery tray, which was thoroughly sanded and cleaned prior to bolting the ring terminals.

The hot wire that goes to the E34 relay block was connected to 12V.

Terminal 85 on the main relay has a weird voltage to it, like 2V. We grounded it and it though it powered the DME (as evidenced by the CEL working), the DME case started heating up, along with the main relay and charcoal canister check valve.

Are there any other grounds that I should be aware of, besides 2 coil grounds, fuel rail ground, and main engine block ground?

I went to Dan's house to troubleshoot the M50 swap as best I could. Sadly, I was unable to get it started. I made the above post using his account.

Do crank position sensors go bad just by sitting? I ohmed out the CKP and it was 528 ohms, and the test value is supposed to be 1280 plus/minus 10% ohms.

Im not sure on the crank position sensor. Something to look into though...
