Guys, how do things change if you start with an M52?

Thicker walls, 2.8 liter. Only reason I'd change would be if you'd rather go 3.2 than 3.0. Also doesn't have a port for the 2nd temp sensor IIRC on the m52 unless its an early one. That is an issue, but its solved easily, so I wouldn't have it as a determining factor on motor choice.
More torque ofcourse and your able to have more displacement than an m50 from the get go. I'd rather go m52 than m50, but I'm runnin an m50 right now and am collecting parts to do an m52 this upcoming summer. Just depends on whats available in your pricerange IMO.

Got it. When you put an OBD1 M50 manifold/tb on a OBD2 engine, do you have to also use the obd1 fuel rail/injectors and coils as well ?

I see they aren't the same per realeom.com

If it is in an OBD2 car, then you must use the OBD2 stuff. But since the car is OBD0, then you should use the OBD1 stuff since it has an integrated fuel pressure reg.

I've got an m52 that had everything pulled off of it so I'm just going to put all obd1 stuff on it and planning on using megasquirt but you could use obd1 software and run it off obd1 easily as most of the s52 swap people do.

What happens when you take the car to BAR once it's all set and done with the engine converted from OBD2 to OBD1? Is this a no no, or is it still legal to do?

Just tell them the motor is out of a '93 325. (assuming they don't check the numbers on it or anything)

I just didn't say anything and they don't pop the hood and I passed it as a 318is.

I don't want to assume :) Let's hear it from CA guys, wouldn't BAR check the VIN on the engine and require it having all of it's OBD2 stuff ?

-I bet you that 90% of inspection officials (at least here in NC) wouldn't even notice the different engine

I'm not in CA... I have no idea how that works over there.

Here in GA, if your motor sniffs better than an M20, you're fine.

Hell, if the motor is ever ran through a machine shop then all of the vin's are pretty much gone at that point.
