The last time I took the roller emissions test with stock S50 but Dinan chipped, the car ran so clean it got a "Fast Pass".

Recently installed TMS kit with Shricks, 3.5 MAF, injectors and chip.

Took the test today and flunked emissions test big time.

Catalytic converter has about 2k miles on it.

Anyone able to get this setup to pass?

Maybe mo power ain't always so better.

I gave away my Dinan chip after I did the swap. Anybody have a stock chip for an s50 to sell if I have to swap everything back?

Here they will do just a tail pipe sniff test on mine, so hopefully I can pass that with a similar setup.

why did it fail? lean? rich?

can you bump up the idle speed a little? usually a cammed car would fail because of the overlap between the intake and exhaust - since the exhaust valve is open so late some of it actually gets in the intake stroke. there are lots of ways to get a cammed car to idle well and cleanly, but we kinda have to know what was wrong first. ;)

If your too lean, you get a lean mis-fire that will raise HC's and CO, and Nox as well.

You can pass HC and CO and still fail Nox.

Many reasons for failing, with out numbers its hard to tell. There are so many variables, but aggressive cams certainly don't help.

my car does NOT pass emissions in Mass. not even close and I have a very similar set up. But I dont run a cat or any kind of emissions equipment at all.

don't the turner chips run really rich at low rpms? you should be able to find a stock chip or an ecu on ebay that you can put in temporarily that should help you pass.
i've got a schrick cam and a dinan chip in my m5 and it passed smog in california very easily. the shop i got the chip from said to not even try it with the turner chip that came with the car because it might fail so badly that it would get labeled a gross polluter in the dmv system.

Off topic, but how much stronger does the car pull now? Trying to decide between Schricks nd Sunbelts. (Oh wait just realized you have a heavy e36 vert)

Advantage to Schricks is that I can send my chip back into Turner and get the tune for like $150. However, I've concluded from hours on bimmerforums that Sunbelts put out significantly greater power throughout the curve.

I passed with flying colors with the 24lb injectors, 3.5 intake and tms tune, less the cams. Now I have the cams, and no cats. :)
