    Vanos Speciality Tools

I am in the process of changing the head gasket, timing chains, sprockets, tensioners, on a m50b25tu & I have had some trouble finding the speciality tools need for this job: see below (I will update with part #'s) Since I couldn't rent or borrow these semi expensive/rare tools I went ahead a bought them. Borrowing/renting them was next to impossible for me.

    Part No. - Description

    13240-Cam lock blocks
    15490-Sprocket turning tool
14230-Chain tensioner (double check you get the correct part no.)
    13450-Vanos air fitting
    12300-TDC pin

I did some research and found a company BAUM TOOLS located in Sarasota Fl. They have a large selection of tools for many makes and models. Pricing was the cheapest I could find and the quality of the items was not sacrificed as a result. I received the parts the following day (I only live an hour south of them) packaging was excellent along with their customer service!!

Now since I have bought these items and they are only used once in a while, a very very long while hopefully. If anyone is in need of these tools I would be willing to "rent" them out pending you pay $150 deposit plus shipping both ways and I recieve them back the way they were sent out I.E. not broken. I understand there will be wear & tear!! I will send you your money back minus shipping of course and you just saved $170 bucks!! If your interested in using these tools they are ready to go!!! PM me.

I wanted to share this information with everyone that may be needing these tools or would like to purchase set for yourself.

I feel for you. I'm in the same position now, except for dual VANOS which is twice the special tools and $$.

yeah, we buy shit from them at work all the time. Our salesperson hooks us up with the 'ebay price" when we shop out of the catalog.

oh yeah, i have never used the tdc pin (no use with aftermarket flywheels) or the dummy tensioner in my life.

Thats exactly why I bought them. They are nice to have, however some people try to keep things cheap and will more than likely be doing the job once so for them it may not be worth the extra expense.

^^ Yep, I'll be renting mine. $40 will let me use them for a week and then I can decide if it's worth buying them. I don't see myself timing dual VANOS that often.

Then you are probably not getting the cam timing right. Might be OK for street motors for customers who don't give a crap. But if you want to go fast, you gotta make the effort.

FYI for those planning to buy the 5 tool kit off ebay from Baum, the chain tensioner is not the correct one for the m50b25tu! Make sure you request them to swap it out with part no. 14230. Also if you call they will price match so you can get ebay pricing.

My first statement may have been an exaggeration, but i seldomly have to reset the timing after checking it, especially on a s/m5x variant, and i have done plenty of street/race motors.

I don't use the factory tensioner tool, either. I use a regular tensioner that I gutted and added a solid rod. I hand tighten it. It pushes against the ramp and takes all the slack out of the chain. Same difference. Nuff said.

The factory tensioner does not provide enough tension on the timing chain while adjusting the cam timing. Its ensures the proper timing!!
