As time went on, the factory developed the car each year, making it faster, more comfortable, and capable of handling at higher speeds.
You don’t want this. You want the trickiest, most dangerous, oldest model you can find. Only then can you prove to the world that you’re a man. -
Thanks. Following Pelican's fairly thorough instructions, they never use either of those tools.

There are two chain tensioners. The one you posted, as pictured, fits directly into the head. The other one fits into the older two-piece timing chain tensioner so you must have the cup that screws into the head in order to use it properly.
EDIT: I just looked at the auction and noticed that the part numbers are all over the place. I removed the PNs until I can clear up which tensioner is which.Comment

Hmm weird because I have "101 performance projects for your bmw 3 series 1982-2000" from pelican and its stressed to use them. I would want to be sure everything is as close to perfect as it can be, its a job that should only be done once!! but to each his own..sigpicComment

It came with everything besides the chain tensioner and TDC pin but don't quote me on that. It has been awhile since I have done the swap. If you find it on ebay for rent ask them what is included.Last edited by e30s52; 03-15-2010, 05:00 AM.Comment

My head is cracked. I have a guy that has a complete head (cams, vanos, etc) that I can get for $350. If my thinking is correct I shouldnt need any special tools to just swap the head-correct? Only if I wanted to take the head in to get cleaned and checked for cracks/resurfacing. Thanks-I have just started to research this..Comment

You will have to remove the timing chain which requires taking the vanos off. So yes you need the tools.
You can get it VERY close without the tools. But it won't be perfect.Past Car : E30 S50 6 Speed 5 Lug 3.73
Current : Z3 S50 OBD2 (Smog Legal) 6 Speed BBS RN Dual Ear Diff
