    Ugh...cranking but no starting

EDIT: Including the specs on car

    M50 Block
    M52 Crank
    M52 Rods
    M52 Pistons
    S50 Cams
    M52 Exhaust Manifolds
Intake and Exhaust ported (every bit helps)

okay, so this thing won't bloody start...

i have fuel, i have current going to coil and definitely have vacuum.

i checked robertk's thread about the auto tranny switch (pin 65 on ecu) and provided a 12v current and still nothing.

i will attempt to pull the coil pack and actually plug the spark plug into it and then crank to see if spark plug is actually getting current.

it also has the EWS delete chip.

i am almost convinced it is the crank position sensor but haven't tested it yet.

here are two vid's of how it cranks:

    anyone have any ideas?

Pour a dash of motor oil into cyliders via spark plug holes.

man, i will probably be transporting this thing back home if i don't get it running by this weekend...the commute out to L.I. is fucking killing me.

does the motor sound good though?

WOT the gas pedal also, you MIGHT have possibly flooded the engine.

i didn't go out there today...it takes way too much time and effort to go out there to simply check for spark hour there, hour back...traffic...

i was in no mood today especially since my g/f's jetta died on me. f'in water pump failed at 40k!!!!!!!! that was my main ride out to l.i.

                proper fecked.

i will be going there this weekend regardless with rohan to double check EVERYTHING.

My problem ended up being that I had pin 7 of the e36 x20 plug wired for 12v. If you have a pre-88 car this might be your problem as well.

It also sounds like your are cranking it at full throttle or have the throttle body pulled off which is not something I would recommend.

hey man, firstly glad you started your car!

The car is actually a 1991 318is production date 9/90.

I don't think my problem is related to yours although I did follow your thread.

The throttle body is actually hooked up...for some of the attempted starts I did not have the intake boot on the throttle body, but I doubt that would PREVENT the car from starting...

plenty of morons over on bfc that run their cars without the maf hooked up

As time went on, the factory developed the car each year, making it faster, more comfortable, and capable of handling at higher speeds.
You don’t want this. You want the trickiest, most dangerous, oldest model you can find. Only then can you prove to the world that you’re a man.

but do they run well? that combined with what sounds like uneven compresstion...

                            have you tested spark yet?

i forgot to mention that i did have the MAF hooked up. it did however come from a 318i...4 prong.

i'm not sure if its the right MAF but i do know that the 6 prong one that i have doesn't work. kind of odd because i was under the impression that OBDII cars had the 4 prong deal and OBDI had 5?

sorry but i will only get the chance to check compression and spark this weekend.

do you think i may be getting uneven compression?

is it possible that since the rings haven't really been seated yet that i may be experiencing the loss in compression?
