I can compare them because the E39 is a horrible drag racing platform. It does not have good weight distribution at all. Yes the M5 does have the 275, the reason why i am comparing them is because the M5 is rear wheel drive, independent suspension and weighs considerably more. The rear suspension design is very similar as are all BMWs thus being a very good comparison. If you can get a sub 60ft with a 4k lb car with a 275 and a strikingly similar suspension, you should be able to launch a 3k lb car with a much smaller tire.

Wheel hop... M5s are horrible in the wheel hop department. I am also very curious in what set ups are experiencing the lack of traction. What spring rates? What sway bars? If you have an extremely high rear spring rate and if your sway bars are set on the tightest setting, you will not have any traction from a dig.

I am can only go off of what Jordan says. You do not need to drag race to understand what traction you have from 0-70.

No with all this said, have you ever tracked your E30? There is much more to traction than tire size, which you keep referring to. You have to understand that there is no car with ideal traction. The driver has to make corrections to limit wheel spin and wheel hop. Also, the boost on the S50 does not come on immediately, it comes on slow and smooth thus helping traction.

    I guess time will tell.

The m5 weighs over 1000lbs more, has a longer wheel base, better weight distribution over the rear wheels, and bigger tires. I guarantee you that Jordan does not drag race his car, he auto-x's it. You WILL have horrible traction issues on a slick track. Most people get wheel hop into 3rd gear with bolt-on s50/2s and 235s on the track in an e30. 245s or even 255s wont help you much with double the power.

Realistically for a good launch and to pull those 60 fts, with out burning the hell out of your clutch, you will need at least 255 drag radials. I'd say shoot for 275s if you can. I will eventually get an S-trim RMS stage 2 kit, which will put me at around 350whp. With that kind of power, I want at least 275s, so I can hook up and GO!

Have you even tried driving your S/C swap car to its limits?

I've had my s52 swap for almost 3 years now, and I put down considerably less power then you. However, I've experienced traction issues with only 235whp and 235/40/17s in the streets. Conditions only get worse on the slicker pavement at the strip.

I realize traction is not all about rubber, a properly tuned suspension and chassis is also part of the battle. I'm running 500# rate springs in the rear, with all polyurethane bushings, and have found it the most optimal for traction and handling. Pretty soon I will be putting a cage in, which will keep the chassis from flexing, and therefore help handling and traction.

Another thing to worry about is halfshafts, and maybe even your driveshaft. Everything should be heavily reinforced before you put the drag radials on your car. The E30 was not meant to put down the amount of power you're putting down, or to sustain the effects of sticky drag radials.

You probably know all of this already, but I'm just forewarning you of the problems you will probably run into in the future.

And the car with the most ideal traction that I've experienced to date, that's not AWD, is the Lotus Exige S 240. Hands down the most fun car I've ever driven!
