    E36 flywheels

Were there any stock single mass flywheels or are they all dual mass ?

Quote on the subject of dual mass / single mass flywheels from bfc -

"dual mass flywheels cannot be lightened or turned. they just get replaced. ...only thing you would have to do when going from dual to single is change the flywheels bolts to the shorter style."

You should be able to just get a single-mass flywheel and a matching clutch. Shorter bolts would be needed, as dual-mass flywheels are pretty thick.

If you take a look at your dual-mass, you'll notice the springs that compress as one side moves with the engine and the other engages and then moves the clutch. The springs "dampen" the torsional movement, making for smoother shifts, but also making the flywheel much heavier.

On a single-mass flywheel/clutch assembly, these springs are moved to the clutch disk, maintaining the weight of the flywheel low.

Check out this little video I just found:

i have never seen a single mass e36 flywheel. however, there are two types of dual mass e36 flywheels. one is standard (us e36's), one is lightened on the outside edges (euro evo.) cheers, jason

Yeah, I don't know about stock single-mass flywheels. Maybe they're talking about non-stock lightened flywheels?

I have this 16lb single mass flywheel, purchased on ebay. It fits perfect, and its about 9lbs lighter than the dual mass. Its a good comprimise between stock, and alum race flywheels.

I've seen these and glad you mentioned it. Any problems with the install? Have you done any research on them?

                  Thanks

                      250's aren't as strong as the zf's...

There is also a stock single mass conversion kit with clutch available. I know it's available from at least two of our suppliers at work. Definitely not cheap though.

^^Probably around a grand for the whole kit? Our suppliers have a similar kit for the M42 with a 19lb. steel flywheel and Sachs components that costs $750.

No problems with the install, fits with no issue of course only with the intended application. S50/zf.
You will get some trans rattle. My zf uses atf. I just swapped to redline MT90 and the noise is gone.

About $750-$800 I think. That includes single mass flywheel, disc, pressure plate and TOB.
