look for a "mesa" plate type oil cooler. just make sure that you mount it with some kind of a rubber isolator (even a thick rubber washer between the cooler and whatever you are mounting it to.

i think it was HOT VW'S or VW TRENDS that did the article on them comparing the tube type and the plate type.

you are going to want to get either the 72 plate (12" X 10") or the 96 plate (12" X 12") either should fit nicely behind the kidney
Thanks for the info! I'm going ro order one of those and return the Summit cooler I think. Do you know if they take standard pipe thread fittings?

IIRC they are pipe, not AN thread.

be sure that you isolate them at the mounting points with either rubber mounted studs (like the fuel pump studs) or at least use a thick rubber washer between the mount and the cooler.

the only failures i have seen with them were from improper mounting (like twisting them) the rubber isolator mounts will give you a little protection from the fittings working their way loose over time too.

i also re added the link for latest rage to my earlier post

If anybody wants to run the Euro oil filter housing, let me know as mine is available.

you might be able to use one from a Volvo (ill track down the part number)
we were using them on water cooled VW's because you could get them from the wreckers and they had a t stat built in (95 deg celsius)

i don't know for sure, since i am not super familiar with the dohc BMW motors. are they all a cartridge type oil filter?

Not some of the older engines like M10, M20, M30, S38, etc. but since this is in the 24v section for E36/E46 engines than they would be cartridge type oil filters.

nope. thats a sangwich adapter to be used with a filter. the IE one is cnc machined (u.s. made...) and retains use of the stock fiter element.

                  its nifty :)

                    Sorry to bump this up!

Matt, did you end up setting this thing up?

I need to start looking at oil coolers and trying to look for something a bit more affordable than the euro e36 housing.

Did you end up purchasing the IE piece? Does it have the two ports like you mentioned?

I run a non-OEM oil cooler setup which includes a 30-row Earl's oil cooler, and Earl's fittings and stainless hoses.
And since I have an Euro engine I already have the Euro oil filter housing, only with a VAC AN-adapter to the oil cooler lines, so it will fit with the Earl's fittings.

                      Really reccomend Earl's stuff...

Haha well since I don't have the pleasure of owning a euro m motor, i want to go for something more affordable but still capable of doing the job.

Any oil-cooler that I purchase will be using AN fittings.

this is probably the best street set up your are going to find. Better cooloing through a new cooler with the oem fit and thermostat of a factory cooler

Either Turner or Bimmerworld sell the Setrab oil cooler setups. They are complete with the cooler, lines, and cap for the filter housing for around $400 if I remember right. Several friends have been using this setup on the track for years. It works great and is easy enough to hook up.

i ended up using the euro e46 m3 oil filter housing with the turner AN10 adapter and had someone weld on male AN10 fitting on the stock oil cooler. looks factory except for the big AN10 lines in the engine bay.

Noob alert. What do you mean by the thermostat of the factory cooler?

Does the oil cooler rely on a thermostat to circulate oil at a given time?

Also, how are you guys mounting the coolers?
