The stock hydraulic lifters tend to collapse especially at sustained high RPMs and will clatter and not open the valves all the way. The drawback with solid lifters is you have to use different cams with clearance ramps designed for use with solid lifters and you have to set and occasionally re-adjust the valve lash, which involves removing the cams and changing lash caps. The benefit is you can run a much more aggressive cam without having to go too much stiffer on the valve springs because the solid lifters are usually much lighter than hydraulics.
