S52 for the win. I figure if you are gonna spend the money, get the best. If you are doing it on a budget, I'd just get an M52 2.8l and maybe some S50/52 cams.

I love the S52 torque, but if it means stripping out driveshafts.. that's no good.

Thats what I am trying to ask about, yes I know the 52 has more power but the 54 in my m3 has even more. This is my go fast car that's what the m3 is, this is my project car.

Meh I'd go with an OBD-1 converted M52. They are plenty fast, and have great torque. If your E46 M3 is the "fast car" I'd just go with the M52 for the iX.

An S50 iX will probably be faster than the E46, which might make the E46 disappointing to drive :D.

A properly tuned obd1 m52 with s52 cams would be on par with an s50. :p

No his was an m50 with s52 cams, 540 hfm, 21.5 injectors, and a tune. And yes that car pulled really hard for what it was!

                    :D.
A swapped e30 with a 3.0 should not have any issues taking out an e46 m3

at a cost of about $700 from the dealer, and you'd need to use a 525ix diff (which doesn't have compatible E30 ratios), haflshafts, hubs, etc. I wish this would die, along with the 525ix 5-lug swap. None of the drivetrain or parts are the same, they're rarer than hens teeth used and cost a fortune new.

it would cost about $200 to modify the ix oil pan, it's uncomplicated and you should be able to use the E36 pick up tube.

if it were me, I'd go with the S52 - wider power band, torquier, just a better motor all around.

an M50 ix would be a complete waste of time.

I have never considered an M50 and I don't see why I would, if I'm putting out this money I want a S5x motor. I also figure if and when my iX awd dies I can just buy a RWD and through the motor in there if I want. I'm pretty sure this motor will out last the car.
