it's about 145lbs heavier. the weight varies by year, earlier cars were actually heavier than later ones (this is true of all E30s). no trunk tar in '91, for example.
an ix drivetrain in good condition can handle hundreds of drag launches in the 200-300hp range. you aren't going to break something driving to the grocery store unless it was broken already.Leave a comment:

i saw some where that the iX weights 2988lbs, i dont know what the weight is of the RWD. The weak links seem to be the splines of the front shaft going into the transfer case, these seem to get rusty and than round off. I have also heard that the front diff doesn't like torque. Keeping this in mind I'm not going to punch it off the line and wait till I'm rolling to get on it, much like any car with power. The stress on those parts is a lot more if I accelerate from a low speed than mat it at a higher speed.Leave a comment:

I just said "probably" because he's talking about an iX, which I'm not terribly familiar with. I dont know how the extra weight and the spline-stripping components affect it compared to a standard rear wheel drive E30.Leave a comment:

I have never considered an M50 and I don't see why I would, if I'm putting out this money I want a S5x motor. I also figure if and when my iX awd dies I can just buy a RWD and through the motor in there if I want. I'm pretty sure this motor will out last the car.Leave a comment:

ahhh .... thats why i did the rwd conversion...at a cost of about $700 from the dealer, and you'd need to use a 525ix diff (which doesn't have compatible E30 ratios), haflshafts, hubs, etc. I wish this would die, along with the 525ix 5-lug swap. None of the drivetrain or parts are the same, they're rarer than hens teeth used and cost a fortune new.
it would cost about $200 to modify the ix oil pan, it's uncomplicated and you should be able to use the E36 pick up tube.
if it were me, I'd go with the S52 - wider power band, torquier, just a better motor all around.
an M50 ix would be a complete waste of time.
thanks nando.Leave a comment:

A swapped e30 with a 3.0 should not have any issues taking out an e46 m3Leave a comment:

No his was an m50 with s52 cams, 540 hfm, 21.5 injectors, and a tune. And yes that car pulled really hard for what it was!

A properly tuned obd1 m52 with s52 cams would be on par with an s50. :pLeave a comment:

Meh I'd go with an OBD-1 converted M52. They are plenty fast, and have great torque. If your E46 M3 is the "fast car" I'd just go with the M52 for the iX.
An S50 iX will probably be faster than the E46, which might make the E46 disappointing to drive :D.Leave a comment:
