S54 swap into an E30 racecar with MarkD ECU tuning

About a month ago, Bavarian Motors/Raven in Toronto swapped an S54 into an E30 racecar. I did the ECU tuning mods and the car has performed flawlessly at Mosport and Calabogie.

I've also been working on a way to use TunerPro to edit S54 maps and have that 95% done now. The reason I did that is it's much faster than the editing method I was using. I also just finished creating a plug-in for TunerPro which calculates the MSS54 checksums. All this work will make it much easier for me to turn around S54 ECU's when people send them for upgrades.

Here are a few pictures for your viewing pleasure! But don't look too hard at the actual values in the tables, I "fuzzified" them ;)

    The car:

The editor pic is just down in my next post.

nice, you considering selling the software too or just keeping it for your own use?

One big downside to keeping MSS54 to me is you end up with sort of a black box. I'm used to being able to do whatever I want to my ECU (MS is a dirty little whore). It would be great if I could at least have *some* control over it..

who knows, maybe sharkedit will come out, some day. :p

You are asking about MarkEdit? My intention is to have MarkEdit going to the market in about 9 months, possibly earlier. I don't really want to sell it as if I do, I'll be losing a lot of business if everyone becomes an S54 tuner and competes against me. So what I plan to do is sell a system with the following parts:

      1) MarkEdit software for a PC.
      2) flashing cable

But to prevent people from figuring out the maps etc and selling them all over the place like they do with my chips, it will work like this:

      - flashing cable only works with one VIN.
      - file from editor is encrypted, and gets decrypted by the flashing cable.
      - the tune can not be read out from the DME, there's no need to. But a new tune can be loaded in.

That should sell, what do you think? You will be able to have access to all parameters that you see in the pic below.

that would definitely get my interest!

what about other things that might be good to change? turning off certain error features, DSC, etc. Pay extra for a custom file? would the baseline tune in the ECU matter?

for example: I want to use MSS54 to control my coolant fan (PWM). but I want control over what temperatures activate the fan. I could do it with resistors but that's a bit of a hack..

Turn off DSC? Have a look at the "patches" section of the screen shot. You can remove EWS or convert an SMG ECU to 6MT there also!

Yes you can pay extra for a custom file.
          - baseline tune does not really matter. I have ways around that, those details will follow.

I have not looked into the coolant fan but that can be controlled easily with a small controller I could sell if people wanted such a device. (or you could find a solution from some other vendor). I can look for that table when I have time and then it should be possible to control from the DME (and editor)

This editor actually works right now, but there is a lot of work to do before I can productise it.

sorry, I could only look at it on my phone, hard to see on a small screen. :)

if everything on the left is an option then you'll have me as a customer!

AFAIK MSS54 already has PWM coolant fan control? (E-box fan, it's a PWM relay?)

anyway it sounds really promising, keep us updated on progress!

ooh, is "secret" in the parameter tree when you drive 88 miles an hour, you are able to travel in time?

There is an E-box fan, we should be able to use that output.

I've been trying to find a suitable relay or even a cheap M3-take off for that purpose. I don't know what the default setpoints are to turn on the fan but I can find out. :)

If you can find out the setpoint, I should be able to locate the map for it, when I am not flashing DME's :firehop:

will do, it'll just take some bench testing.

                      and I thought having 2 MSS54s was a lot :p

5 of those are for customers, all have to go out in the next week. I only have five for myself.

I want to mention that in a few months, I expect to be flashing MSS54 ECU's in the USA so no need to ship them to Canada. But in case I don't set that up, I am now able to flash and return these ECU's from Toronto within 3 days. And if someone is in a real rush and in Toronto, I can do it in 2 hours but prefer not to.
