    Starting my m54 swap

I was cruising through the forum looking for something about the wiring harness and how I can adapt the m54 harness into the e30 fuse box and get all my overhead check lights and everything to work correctly. I was wondering if anyone had some info on how to get the wiring to adapt like a plug or something because I know the m52 has one, or what wires to solder where on the e30 plug. Any info or wiring diagrams or info on how to approach it easier would be fantastic, thank you

Ill be doing harness conversions for these swaps shortly.

Wow that's great to hear i'm glad you said that before I bought an engine.
I was for sure going to buy either an M52 or S52 but now i'm gonna have to reconsider. The main thing stopping me from doing an M54 was dealing with the extra complicated harness modification and getting the ECU flashed similar to OBD2 e36 to delete emissions stuff and the EWS security stuff which noone in the US does.
If you can do the harness and ECU to make it "plug and play" I would definitely be interested and i'm sure many other people too.

why not just transfer all the EWS stuff over? then you don't have to pay extra to have it removed.

^ I'd imagine most people would rather pay to have it done right and deleted from the ECU than get all that crap working in an e30. Same reason most people get EWS deleted on OBD2 m52/s52 swaps instead of having the EWS parts like key and all hanging somewhere under your dash. Just seems like a cheap way to do it that can result in problems and headaches eventually.

Megasquirt LOVES the M54 (and vice-versa)

Dual VANOS. DISA. Traction Control. 230 whp. No sweat.

how is it more "done right"? you can install the transponder ring in the E30 ignition lock and put the chip in your E30 key. Then you have a factory imobilizer that can basically not be broken (a weakness is they can read your VIN and decode the key that way, but if you've swapped it into an E30 that won't work).

people get EWS deleted because they don't know how to instal it, not because it's neccesarily better.

Arriving at the same end result (the engine starting reliably), in a less complex and easier way, while also using less additional parts, is to me "done right". Your way sounds like more work than it's worth since I don't care at all about the security aspect of it. If I was ever really that concerned with someone breaking in and stealing the car i'll just take fuse 21 out or the one for the fuel pump.

Well, some people would prefer to have the EWS because they DO care about security. Cutting corners is not the definition of doing it "Right"

This is how you measure "done right": WWBMWD?

                  What Would BMW Do?
If they wanted to put an m54 into an e30, how would they do it?
Would the run it with EWS? I bet you they would if the car was to be driven on the street.

Some of us live in cities, and people WILL steal your e30 here.
