can shift into 3rd while driving w/o clutch

basically what the title says.

I can shift in and out of third gear while I'm driving without the clutch depressed. Nothing really happens when I shift out, but when I shift it back in, there's a slight clunk.
This only happens when I'm driving, when the car is stopped, I can't move it in or out of third.

Its normal, at certian rpm's and speeds you can esstenially jam a transmission into gear without using a clutch this is the clunk you're hearing.

Its a good thing to know to get yourself home if your clutch ever goes :P

it's called rev matching

old manuals didn't have synchros, you had to do match the RPM with the engine with the RPM of the gear you wanted to use, even with a clutch.

it probably means your 3rd gear synchros are in great shape!

Yea in any manual you are often able to shift through every gear with no clutch. I think it's pretty cool myself.

Good thing to be familiar with in case you ever lose your slave-cyl while on the road, it can help avoid a hefty towing fee.

Only really works for the slave cyl or the clutch cable. Really really bad for your started if you have to stop. I don't know if any e30s are made with starters that make you push in the clutch to start, but if you have one of those it won't work either.

I drove the other day without pressing the clutch in at all (except to go into first.) It's fun to practice rev matching.
