Because it isn't worth BMW making parts for the iX in enough bulk to bring costs down. What little they do have left is largely NOS, with exorbitant prices to match.
There were less iX's built than M3's (at least for the US), so that should tell you something.1991 318iS

Plus, I'd wager to bet iX's got taken a *bit* better care of over the years, as they typically carry a premium in price.Last edited by ChaseN; 09-28-2010, 01:02 PM.1991 318iS

when bmw decides it isn't worth making a certain part anymore, they have a habit of steadily increasing the price to the point where no one wants to buy it. other examples are mtech 2 body panels and dashboards. if you feel like shitting your pants, just price those items.sigpic

the prices on some of the low volume/specialty parts are a little sporadic.
I think it basically comes down to demand and availability. once in a while they're merely $500 - probably right after they've just had a bunch produced. once the supply gets low, the price goes up so they don't run out.
Basically think about it this way - yeah, it's $1300, but if you *had* to buy one, you could. If this were a ford or a chevy model of similar age and low-production (5000 US, 25000 worldwide), you wouldn't be able to buy one at *any* price. it's BMW's way of making sure there is at least *some* supply available.
and anyway just have them rebuilt or buy used. Rebuilding is about 10x cheaper, as long as you don't let them get so bad that you grenade a CV joint they'll last nearly forever.

also, prices on many E30 parts that aren't just regular maintenance stuff definitely went up after the E30 was added to the "archive" section, and not just odd 325ix parts either.
