There is an 89 325IX for sale near me under 4K, looks nice. My daily daily driver is an 06 Volvo Cross country, smooth shifting, I actually own 4 of them. Also have a sweet 87 325IC and am looking seriously at this 89 IX for my son. Are they all wheel drive all the time? Smooth? perform well with the extra weight? Not interested in a newer one, love the e-30 platform..... Not sure how these go down the road. I had an early Mercedes 4 matic, disaster...

In my opinion one of the most neutral handling and stable awd systems I've ever personally driven. AWD is always on. If you're looking to buy make sure the center viscous diff isn't blown and the front cv boots look good. Also make sure the tires are the same size or the center v.diff will be blownLast edited by actionpod; 03-21-2011, 05:07 AM.1988 325iX
Protection? From who, "ze Germans?"

Wouldn't be this one would it?
Nice looking rig if so, wonder how many miles it has. IX's are sweet cars, I hope your son is a good driver because these cars are fun to drive and its hard not to drive them fast. Plan to get a decent set of snow tires and the IX will take you up ski slopes and frozen waterfalls (w/ studded snows of course).

Get that car! with a V6 and mad chromies how can you go wrong?!
seriously though, the IX if well maintained is excellent and drives very well, even in the dry. Keep good maintenance and it will last a long time. Met a guy in the summer that had over 700k kms on an 87.88 325 IX DiamantSchwarz - TOURING - waiting...

I currently have 3 of these awd monsters.
I use one of them for off roading. They can take alot of abuse, just make sure you keep onto of inspecting parts. Repairing them before they break is way way cheaper than replacing it after it breaks.Tri color fabric for sale here!

Having owned both 1st gen and 2nd gen mercedes 4matic's I can tell you the 325ix is in a completely different league. The old 4matic, when it worked, was fantastic at getting you potosive traction in deep snow, but as a preformance AWD it sucked. Newer 4matic has nicer sporty traction with a good rear bias, but not that great in deeper snow.
Not to framiliar with AWD volvos, but compared to my volvo 850 the 325ix is less comfortable but way way more fun to drive.
The BMW is best of both. Amazing in snow and great for sport/fun driving. It would be a great car for your son.
