E30 IX steering rack Re&Re - how to?

    Hi All,

I've removed and replaced 3 E30 steering racks already, all with E36 conversions, some with PS some w/out. I know I have to use a regular ix rack as the mounting tabs are reversed on the ix racks.

I've never done one on an IX.

Has anyone here done an ix rack? Are there substantial differences? I'm a "tab bender" as opposed to an "engine lifter". Can I still get away with this sloppy technique on my ix?

you can't bend any tabs on the ix because there aren't any. The ix subframe is solid aluminum.

I'm afraid you'll have to drop / lift something on the ix as the rack goes through the subframe and the oil pan sort of gets in the way.

How much extra work is an ix rack vs a regular e30?

      Hi,

Thanks, thats what I thought, Was hoping for different.

How much extra work would you say it is on the ix vs a regular e30?

I guess hanging the engine on the hoist and dropping the front subframe is the best way to do it eh?

I think I would try undoing the main 2 motor mount bolts and putting a block of wood under the oil pan. jack up the motor and see if you can slide the rack through the subframe.

Do you mean slide it out through (left or right) the subframe? Or slide it out towards the back or front of the car after the engine is raised.

you *have* to slide it through. it passes through the subframe, you can't slide it forwards or backwards.

Ok, thanks, my front axles have torn boots so the whole subframe is coated in oil and hard to see around :-) (I'll do the front drive shaft boots when I do the steering rack).

Thanks Nando, very helpful. PAC NW FTW! ;-)

I've got a bit more confidence to "git er done" now.

you'll have to completely undo the tie rod on one side to remove the steering rack from the subframe. and you'll have to drop the subframe to do that.
