    ix vs others

Been in the market for a new e30 for a few months now. I've kinda been passing up ix's but it's getting mighty hard to find a good i or is in my price range. Just wondering what performance I would be losing/gaining if I went with an ix. Thanks!

      ix > is

you lose .2 seconds in the quarter mile and you gain a crap ton of grip.
      AWD > RWD

so ix handling>is handling? i wouldn't have thought that.. other than the awd vs rwd they're fairly similar then? i've noticed that most ix's come all loaded up with the sporty goodies (seats, lip, etc.)

of course. awd has 2 more tires putting power to the pavement.

but it does add 143lbs and out of the box, the car will tend to understeer. unlike an is which tends to oversteer.

You cant go as low with an ix as you can with an is, btw. This will limit your suspension choices if you choose to go aftermarket.

Ok cool. Well where I live handling is way more important than speed because speed limit through town is 25 and on the curvy backroads is 35. Also it's a quiet town so all cops do is write tickets for 5 over. I've seen a lot of is with the power steering out. Would that be viable with an ix or would you want it with the little extra weight?

The only things Id do to an ix is maintenance (regular & ix-specific), Billie HD's, and H&R Sports. Oh and cosmetic stuff. I'd try to keep it simple and mostly stock for reliability- sake. But thats just me. (also i have never owned an ix so this is just from what i've read.)

Thanks alot.. the suspension stuff may have to come after owning the car for a little seeing as funds are somewhat tight but it's nice to know what to look for and what i can do

ix's are neat, but you need to know the differences. Suspension is far more limited in choice, transfer cases, and front axles are hard to find and damn pricey, engine swaps are far more complex and near non existent. ix's are far more rare, and if you know it's what you want than great, but they do need a different kind of owner. The steering isn't as responsive and connected, they do have more traction but due to weight aren't as nimble as their 2wd counterparts. I would say for a first E30, avoid them until you know what you are getting into.

Don't get me wrong, ix owners tend to really love their cars, I just think that someone should know what they are getting into when they get one, it's a different E30 experience.
