yes.. support the engine from the top, and remove the subframe.

its not a quick or simple job by any means, no matter how you approach it.

For the rear bolts there is something covering them i took the four bolts that where in it off but

do i also have to take off the torx bolts that are on the transmission to get this cover off

also do i have to remove the drive shaft to get the front diferential off

your trying to get the diff off? To get the diff off you much first pull the axles shafts out. Then the driveshaft.

Once it is unbolted (4 bolts) you may have to pry it away from the pan because its a tight sealing fit into the pan.

you don't need to remove the diff to remove the oil pan..

as a sidebar... If I wanted to just replace the oil pan gasket, would you guys recommend that I remove the entire pan as the best way to handle this?

ah... yeah... aren't you going to clean it first before putting the new one in?

you can reseal the pan but there isn't a gasket.

?? no oil pan gasket for the IX? do the other e30 models have gaskets for their oil pans?

i'm leaking all over the place underneth, does that mean I just need to just replace the sealant?

                      nope, yes

I'd steam clean the underside of the engine and verify leaks first. could be main seals, or gaskets from above..
