Here is the back wheel 16x7.5 et35 with 225s. I've thought about putting 10mm spacers I have on the back, but it didn't like the idea of having the back wider than the front, even if it made it flush. The back is probably narrower for a reason. My car isn't as low as nando's or kershaws so you can't see how much space there is as well, but you can get an idea.

Here is a pic of the front and back. Ignore the huge nasty wheel gap, I will be fixing this hopefully soon when I get some money for gc. Notice that the back is set in quite a bit further than the front.

There's a chance you may need a tiny spacer (3mm) to clear the brake calipers up front (not because of ix, but because of E30 - all E30 4-lug front brakes are the same). They'd still fit fine at ET32 effective offset.
I didn't have to use a spacer at all on the front the clear the caliper with et35, so you should be fine. I'm pretty sure I'm not rubbing, but I didn't really check specifically to see if I was.

when you lower the car you'll find that you'll run out of extra space fairly quickly. I'd expect a 225 on a 35mm offset wheel would clear with no modifications. as soon as you lower the offset, the lips will need rolled and the flares trimmed. the rubbing up inside the body, unfortunately, can't be corrected easily.

brake clearance just depends on the wheel. mine rubbed the caliper slightly. with a 3mm spacer, there's just enough clearance. it's still tight but it doesn't touch.

225/45/16 should fit fine with that offset. That is what I am running and I don't rub at all with my et35 wheels, but I also am not very low. I don't think I would rub if I was low though. You might even be able to go up to a 235, but then you might be rubbing a little without fender adjustments. nando?

with a 7" wheel and ET37 you may be too close to the strut. I'd reccomend a ~5mm spacer. 235s are probably too wide for a 7" wheel but 225s would be fine.

I had 225s on my stock 15x7 baskets (which are et41). I wasn't touching the strut but was very close. The 225/45/16 are only slightly larger (I think I did the calculations and it was like .1in or something larger diameter) than 225/50/15s which is what I had. So you might be okay without the spacer, but you would be sure with a 5mm spacer as nando says.

the tirerack doesn't really let you + size very much on E30s. but, 205/50-16 would be pretty close to stock, 225/50-16 is a little tall. although, I have 235/50-15s and it's not that big of a difference. I think 225/45-16 would be ideal but there may not be many choices.

hmmph. still on the fence. id like to avoid rings and spacers and have the beef i used to have with basketweaves on dunlop 225/50/15.

if a new baskets were still available whole thing would be a non issue for me.

                          cheers

It's true there aren't a lot of options for 225/45/16. I found some on onlinetires.com, but discounttiresdirect has the most options if I remember right and they guarantee to be cheaper than tirerack or onlinetire. Im running falken 452s and so far they are good, but they are essentially new.

this is a very useful tool.

and yes nando, that is pretty tucked in the rear. :)
