the internals are all the same, except for the front input shaft. but you can swap everything else between auto/manual ix's, chain, VC, gears, bearings, ETC.

to rebuild your case, assuming the bearings and VC are good, you'll need a new chain, and you're supposed to use new sprockets, but I've swapped chains with different sprockets without issue.

You just have to make sure if you have an earlier tcase, that you need an early chain, or just replace it with a new matched chain and gears. they changed the style of the links, and if you put the wrong chain on the wrong sprockets it will be noisy.

The shop messed up and admitted it. I get a new transfer case on their bill :)

Manual or automatic? The automatic have a nasty habit of the xcase leaking into the autotrans, and there would be no signs of outward leaking.

The shop is in Norway.. maybe this will be my regular oil change shop so I can get a new engine at some point ;)

Its an Automatic.. but I don't believe that it can leak so much that not a drop comes out the drain plug. And not in 6 weeks.

6 weeks ago I asked the shop to change "all oil on the car", hence it should have been up to date. I'm lucky to have been driving so much these past weeks.. at least 1200 km

After the shop did admit to making the error, they said that they refilled and everything was OK. But since they already admitted to making the mistake I said that I would not take the car back without a full overhaul of the transfer case. They then decided to buy a new one.. costing almost 3800$ plus labor (140$ a hour) in Norway :)

                score!!!!

I just had BMW send me a check for scuffing up the bumper & peeling the clear bra on my M3, when it was at the dealer for service.....its good to know some places take responsibility for their actions.
