It's possible to drive with just the rear shaft. I don't know that I would attempt to drive further than around the driveway with just the front shaft in.

the front diff is pretty tiny - I wouldn't want to put all the car's torque through it either.

the torque split is wrong for using the front shaft only. as mentioned above, the front diff is too weak to handle the entire load of the car for any length of time. i would do it if it was a matter of being stranded in the middle of the desert and that was the only way out of there other than walking. otherwise, let the car sit until you can repair it properly.

don't do it! when i bought my car it was missing the rear half shafts after about 2 months of me putting off fixing it my trans died on me. my transmission guy told me it was the missing half shafts that did me in. cost more to fix my transmission and transfercase than it did to buy the car..
Red-ish 89 325ix with dent in the door, bad paint, missing center caps, broken defrost, broken ac, p/s pump may be going, brake pad sensors missing. On the plus side i just had the trannie and tc fixed for 2 grand!!

just curious why would you want a fwd e30?
or do you just not want to buy the rear end parts.

I off loaded mine from a tow dolly with the rear drive shaft removed. it beats the jack test. Long lengths of use would probably cause the silicone in the VC to start ozzing out and rendering the center diff useless. Which would probably be the end of the FWD iX
