Looking for a Manual Trans Tranfer Case...

    Hi guys,

I know this is not the 'for sale' section of the site, but I thought this would be better seen in here. I'm looking for a Manual Trans Transfer Case, brand new VC, and/or recently rebuilt transfer case, preferably within a days driving distance of Charlotte, NC. My plan is to rebuild the TC on the bench with a new VC and then swap it into my car when I replace the clutch. Also, I could use an IX engine (that has never had cooling issues) so I can build that up outside the car. My IX is my DD and I need to keep it on the road for as long as possible, so finding these parts and getting them rebuilt would be a big help, especially if I can keep from breaking the bank on shipping all of this stuff. Let me know what you've got!

shipping a TC shouldn't be that bad - around $40?

i have an ix engine with 140k. it runs well and i have actually driven the car it came from. willing to ship.

good luck with your tcase search that one won't be easy. you will find that lots of people will sell them as being good, but usually they turn out to be the opposite of this. ask me how i know.

Thanks. I'm not too concerned about finding a 'good' t-case. As long as the mechanicals are in good shape, I plan to rebuild it with new bearings, seals and a new VC. As far as your engine goes, I will keep you in mind if I can't find something closer by. Thanks for the reply.

at that cost (if you add a chain), you could just get a remanufactured one from BMW.

I've never seen the bearings inside a TC go bad. Not unless it was run bone-dry.

I've considered that too. I've yet to go to a dealer and find out just how bad the price is. If I'm going to go to all the trouble of rebuilding it, I think its cheap insurance to spend $50ish bucks on bearings. I mean, almost all our cars are in that 200k+ mile range now, and I hope to get another 200K miles out of mine, so if I get a used TC, I might as well just replace them.

All you IX guys out there, and no one has a transfer case lying around in the garage taking up space that they wanna sell me?! The VC can even be junk! I'm gonna rebuild it anyway!

i don't think you have priced bearings. the full set will cost a LOT more than 50 bucks. replace them if you will but i agree with nando. if they spin nicely, just reuse them. don't waste several hundred dollars on this.

I recently priced brgs out. RealOEM suggests about $150 bucks. If I go to a brg specialty place and give them dimensions, it will probably be less. However, I agree with you both after thinking it through, I'll see how they feel and go from there. I'm excited about doing this Project ONCE, and ONCE only. I will not be a happy camper if I have to yank all this stuff out again and replace brgs or seals because I wanted to save a few bucks. My time is worth more than that.

On another note, I went to the dealership today and they priced me $600 for a new VC shipped. And a $1700 and change for a complete reman'd transfer case.

Thanks for the input guys, keep it coming!

PM 325ix, he's parting out an 88ix with a manual. However, the VC is shot.

Here's a video of the jack test:

He's out of town for a while, though.

The guys that have those lying around hoard them. Good luck. Everyone wants to find one of them. Get your money ready They do pop up on occasion. Lucky Hendrickson had one for sale awhile back. He was trying to raise some money for a lift and I seem to remember that he mentioned that he hoards them things. Try there
