What are IX'ers using for shifter mod?

I was reading another post on shifter mods on e30's. Lots of info but not many IX opinions. Are most guys running the z3 1.9? 2.8? going to the z4's? Whats the plan? M roadster? I'm not into the real hard, notchy throw.

z3 1.9. Only difference I detect is what I presume is due to the replacement of all the other linkage bits.

had the z3 shifter in my old iX and hated it. Too notchy for me. I love the stock linkage mated up w/ the weighted ZHP knob. The height, feel, and smoothness is perfect imo.

I don't know what you did that made it notchy. Mine isn't even a little bit notchy.

the stock ix lever has the longest throw of basically any BMW. I hated it. the Z3 1.9 is about the only one that will clear the transfercase, and the lever is still basically the same height except it has slightly less leverage on the other end.

Anyone try anything out of a 5 series? How bout a e39, should have ample height.

there's not much else that will fit. you extend the bottom part of the lever much more than 1/2" and it will hit the transfercase.

You can do it from the top, a little tight though.
If you want even shorter throw you can raise the rear mounting point to clear the tc with a longer shifter.

Thanks! Do you know of a DIY from the top? I've looked, can't seem to find one!

I've always heard horror stories from people trying it with out removing anything. Now I haven't dine it yet but from what I've read it deans like most people drop the exhaust and rear driveshaft and transmission mount and just lower everything as much as possible. If you do it from the top please let me know ill give it try then, I've been waiting till my clutch went out then just doing it then haha
