Auto transfer case seal part numbers

    iX Gurus:

I've been searching both R3v and the E30Tech forums and can't find the definite answers to what I'm looking for.

This is for an automatic 89 iX. I'm going to be swapping in a different transfer case to "fix" my loose chain issue on my current transfer case.

The RealOEM diagram only shows the transfer case part breakdown for the manual transfer case. So the questions are ...

    1) I need the seal part number and quantity of seals for the input shaft hole on the transfer case. I know that on the manual transfer case that input shaft seals (there are two) require removal of the transfer case input shaft - but on the automatic transfer case we're talking about a "hole" that the output shaft of the automatic transmission fits into. So - on the automatic transfer case are the input shaft seal(s) replaceable without having to crack the transfer case open?

    2) I can't seem to find the part number for the gasket that goes between the automatic transmission and the transfer case. I'm assuming it may be the same gasket that would be used between the automatic transmission main case and rear case on any other ZF 4HP22 auto transmission - but I'm not sure on that. Does anyone have a part number for that?

    Thanks!

there's only one seal on the input shaft of the manual. on the automatic, I think the diagram shows the correct quantity though.

I don't remember there being a gasket between the trans and transmission. It seems like there would need to be something, but I don't remember as it was more than a decade ago. does the transmission parts breakdown show anything?

I believe there is one between the auto and TC. I just went through my posts on here and onE30Tech to see if I could find my questions on this from 5 years ago or so. It must have been on the Yahoo group, for I couldn't find it on either... I don't have the time to search the Yahoo group, sorry.

It is a thin, paper-like gasket that I ripped when installing, so ordered like 3 more just to be safe if I ripped it again. NO idea on part number then...

Have you tried looking on the automatic transmission pic instead of the TC pic on Real OEM?

The Real OEM picture shows a gasket between the transmission main case and the transmission rear case (which does not exist on an iX because of the transfer case). I'm going to assume this is the right gasket since it is on the parts list for the iX while none of the rear case part numbers are listed. It's a $6 part so I won't be brokenhearted if its wrong.

Now about that input shaft seal(s) ... can anyone confirm that the part number is 27111226314, that there are indeed two of them required, and they are replaceable from the outside of the transfer case? Those seals are about $16 each and I'd rather not guess on that.

There was a gasket between the case and the transmission originally. I have cleaned the surfaces very well and used good quality silicone, while applying thread locker on the bolts. Sealed up for the long haul for me.

As for the input shaft seal, there were two for sure. Be careful to measure the depth and orientation of both.

I assume you are talking about the seals on the input side of the transfer case - they are extractable after removing the case from the transmission. Not sure of your meaning, but they can be replaced without splitting the case after its removal.

Be prepared for a ton of patience if you are doing this in the car. I would highly suggest lowering the whole subframe onto some longer bolts if you are.

As for the schematics, I am seeing a pic of the manual case, but I think your numbers are correct (27111226314 - two required). When I click on the automatic case (see below), there is a pic of the manual case, in other words.

            packratbimmer:

I think you nailed it! The picture that comes up on RealOEM is the same whether the car selected has an automatic or manual transmission. But the part lists are different.

The automatic transfer case parts list starts with item #6 (input shaft seals). The manual transfer case parts list includes items #1-5 (the guibo, bolts, and input shaft) that are part of the manual transfer case but NOT part of the automatic transfer case.

And the part numbers for the input shaft seals are different between the automatic and manual transfer cases.

Note to self - RealOEM diagrams may or may NOT reflect what the parts list shows. Goofy way to do it, but lesson learned.

Time to order some parts and prep the replacement transfer case for transplant and a return to all wheel motoring!
