    transmission questions

So if the internals are the same between a ix getrag 260 and a normal e30 getrag 260 can I just buy the cheaper rwd transmission and just swap the internals over to the broken ix 5 speed transmission case?

my ix transmission is randomly stuck in reverse gear while the shifter is stuck in neutral..so it sounds like I need a new transmission and it seems alot easier and almost half the price to buy a rwd 5 speed

So it looks like only the back half is different

How hard is it to split a transmission?

yes but you will likely need to rebuild it which isn't cheap.

manual transmissions should be easy to work on, but since I don't have time I had one built by drivegear.com. if you have time you can probably do it yourself.

I had mine build by drivegear for my Ix, personally not happy with it for the price but what can you do...

Nando what do you mean I would have to rebuild it?o
until yesterday the transmission was perfectly fine and shifted smoothly into all 5 gears it is just stuck Reverse which is a problem with the syncros

So assuming the back half of my transmission is still good and I get a nice replacement manual (out of my convertable parts car) what will 8 have to rebuild or do you sugges doing that as a while you are in there type of thing?

And mine time is worthless so I am more than willing to take it apart my self

To me it sounds like some of the return springs or similar

Mine looked nice and new but it definitely isn't. It seams to have loud layshaft bearings and I had a lot of proplems with the reverse satey spring inside the transmission which was not an easy fix while it's in the car haha

The entire transmission is built in the rear "cap". The entire front half of the case slides right off. Swapping the rear cap onto a different gearset requires pressing everything apart. Basically, swapping the bellhousing is just popping the case apart and putting it back together. Swapping the rear cap is a full takedown of the entire unit.

yea got the whole thing for 350...not bad considering it has less than 100,000 miles and the only other option was another used transmission for 650 and that was before shipping
thanks audiquattrot I definitely owe you one
