    Winter Prep

    Winters fast approaching, living in northern Canada im expecting some snow, what do you guys suggest for winter prep? I have studded winter tires, anything else ?

    I throw salt bags in the trunk for some extra rear end weight.

        Basic tune up never hurts. Fresh coolant/antifreeze, ect. A few of my cars run distilled water and I have to change it out this time of year.

        Make sure your brakes are good, ABS is functioning, etc.

            park it in the garage, change the oil, hook up battery tender, put car cover on, and drive my "beater" E90 for the winter. :p

              that is completely unnecessary. this isn't a truck without any weight in the rear. in fact, the stock ix suspension and weight balance was already designed for optimum traction. Even down to the torque split of the transfercase.

                I knew that, but I am no longer an iX owner. She was crashed in winter last year :( Now I have a 325i and e34 which is my winter ride this year.

                  My biggest thing is the coolant and get the winter tires mounted. Check the battery specific gravity and that's it for me.

                      Being fortunate enough (Or not?) to have never lived in a snowy area, how do winter tires work? You buy them, use them for the season, then use them again next season? Do they expire and need to bought new every season or something?

                        Depending on mileage you drive, they can last a few seasons, I've had a set last 4 winters.

                          It depends on how much you drive but they do have a shorter lifespan than most other tire categories. Unfortunately though, I don't have another set of wheels for them so I have to swap them over at the beginning and end of the season. I'd like to score a set of cheap steelies as a dedicated snow tire set.

                            The rubber on winter tires is softer theres a compound in them that does this, it makes them so they aren't hard once it gets colder out

                              Check the front driveshaft splines, diff oil and change the transfer case oil.
