    Jack test

I think my ix transfer case or front drive shaft has worn out. Is there a way to test the tcase other then the traditional jack test? Am I able to jack up all four corners and do a test. I don't have the necessary room to do the jack test. Any info will help.

    Thanks in advance.

jack test doesn't need a bunch of room. jack up the rear diff and slowly accelerate forward. you should see the wheels turning in less than 12" of forward movement.

When I did the jack test, I let off the second the car started moving as I was afraid of falling off the jack. If the car moves at all, the VC is good.

I just did a jack test last weekend, and as Andrew said, as soon as it started moving I stopped. If you move, you know it's good.

if the car begins to move forward, you know that your vc is at least good-ish.

did you happen to read the sticky that is exactly one thread above this one when you posted it was a new thread???

in case you missed it, its clearly titled "testing your transfer case without using the jack test"

I saw it, i was just curious if there was another way to do it. But if you don't need much space ill give it a try with the jack test. Thanks

Jack one front wheel off the ground about a 1/16th of an inch. If it spins free, the VC is likely toast.

like flyboy said, if it moves all you know is good-ish. You have to compare the front and rear wheel speeds to know how good the VC is. If your inching forwards and the rear wheels are spinning way faster than the fronts your VC is likely on the way out.

You should put a post it note or piece of tape on the front and rear tire and compare how fast they spin, if they spin at the same-ish speed you have a solid VC, if not then its not 100%

                  - Load floor jack into trunk

                  - Proceed to nearest shopping center or large parking lot

                  - Perform jack test by using floor jack under differential. Be nice to your differential and separate it from the floor jack with a block of wood.

                  - Lower car and return floor jack to trunk

                  - Leave with either a smile or a frown on your face.

Don't have a floor jack? You need one. I wouldn't jack up my bicycle with the factory jack.

Keep in mind that if your rear subframe bushings are on their last leg, jacking from the subframe could finish them off and you will have a major job on your hands that could cause major vibrations.

The one front wheel up method is easier. I guess the jack test is more exciting!!!
