Yeah!! Huge pain in the ass, I installed the passenger side in like 35 mins. Now I'm onto the drivers side and I can't even get the tabs on the washer down. It's going to suck to put on the clamp for the inner part of the boot.. I recommend doing this only when the subframe has to be dropped.. HahaBuild Thread

No I can't tighten it anymore but I'll try rethreading it a few times also I just noticed one of the Ocap tie rods has a lot less resistance on the inner joint than the other. Is this ok for a new tie rod?Build Thread

I just did this on an IX.
I used a pipe wrench to remove and install. my 32mm wrench was a bit too thick to get between washer and on the tie rod.
I cant tell by the pic? Is the replacement (inner) tie rod not threading into the steering rack. That's an issue - it should not bind up - you should be able to do thread it in by hand - then tighten, then bend tab.
Look at the one you took out - is it knarled or stripped? Is the inside of the steering stripped? Is the new one stripped? I would figure that out before dropping subframe.
also - Clamping - I use zip ties on all my boots.. I know I might get flack for it - but it is so much easier - and I have not lost a one... boot wears out before zip tie does..

Yeah, all the threads look ok. And the replacement threads in fine. I would use the zip tie method if I wasn't waiting on other parts for the car. I'm just going to drop the subframe and go from there.Build Thread

What will pulling the subfrme accomplish? a better angle for torque?
I don't think removing the subframe will help you get the tie rod in - your problem lies in the fact that you cannot screw the inner rod into the steering rack. That needs to be figured out.
Pulling the subframe will just add to your work, you might even create more problems.
Do you know why the tie rod wont screw in?
just to be clear - if you are working on the drivers side - turn the wheel all the way to the left and the steering rack shaft will extend out beyond the subframe. You should be able to thread the tie rod by hand, if it catches - use a pipe wrench (or your fan wrench) and tighten.Last edited by 95BMWIC; 06-20-2016, 08:28 PM.
