rear differential on automatic iX... dying.

So my diff is humming/squeeking a bit -

Is there any general maintenance, or anything I can do to fix it -

Flush the fluids and replace... add an additive?

Or am I stuck looking for a new rear diff?

probably a bad pinion bearing. if you can live with it, it will last a long, long time like that.

sure it's not your fuel pump or something else?

hmmm it seems it only whines when im on the gas -

a pinion bearing would probably whine regardless of if i was on the gas or not, right?

don't think its the fuel pump - the noise is coming from the rear of the car... that's why im leaning towards the rear diff

if it is indeed the rear diff, what are my options?

bad bearings can definitely change in pitch with load

if you're sure it's not your fuel pump, you really only have 3 choices:

-buy a new/used diff (yours has a 4.10 VC, ix specific)
-rebuild your diff with new bearings (best to have a pro do it)
-live with it.

you can try flushing the fluids but if the bearings are already gone, it's probably too late.

Sure you aren't mistaking the transmission input shaft bearing for the diff?

My transmission is on the way out and whining like a fucking jet engine.

Get the car up on a lift and run through the gears. A mechanic with a stethescope can locate the noise and determine what needs service. It would be a waste to replace the diff only to find that wheel bearings, or CV joints were causing the noise.

I had a similar issue and was about to replace wheel bearings. A friendly mechanic offered to put the car on his lift and verify the noise source before I went to the trouble of replacing bearings. I wasn't real happy to find out the differential was bad, but it would have been worse to do the bearings and still have the noise.
