    iX oil filter change

I CANNOT for the life of me figure out how to take the oil filter off.
I tried turning it by hand, but i cant get a solid enough grip on it to turn it.
I used an oil filter wrench, but I couldn't get enough space under there to move it. It would get stuck between the headers or the front diff.

It's really frustrating me as I know the oil filter is a significant part to a proper oil change but I can't get it off.
any of you iX guys have any tricks or tips?

Same as any other filter, twist it off. Go buy yourself a set of oil filter pliers though, that should improve things for now and when you put the new filter on don't over tighten it this time

The thing is I can't twist it off. Like I said, by hand, it's too greasy to get a firm hold, and with the oil filter wrench I don't have room to turn it.

I've never switched the oil filter myself on my iX, it's the PO who over tightened it and fucked me.

I'll look into the pliers though.

          Then you're way overtightening them.

That is usually a last resort. Oil filters should not be that tight. I'm imagining that they are dry gasketed as well?

wouldnt you be risking stripping the threads when youre hammering the screwdriver through the filter?

go to any auto parts store and buy a oil filter socket, bring your new filter to make sure it fits, get an extension, hammer on the socket and twist off. i had this same problem with my iX on its first oil change If your skinny enough you can fit under the car without putting it on jack stands.

you need a "cap" style oil filter wrench that goes on the end of a ratchet. they sell them at autoparts stores, I happened to get mine from bavauto. I don't even screw around trying to undo the filter by hand anymore, I always go straight for the tool and have it off in a few seconds.

also this really isn't an ix question as there isn't anything about changing the filter that is different from the other E30s. ;)
