    Bumper strips- Needs some work.

The other Day I finnaly Got my bumper taken apart. I took apart the bumper strips so they can be repainted to match my new licence plate strip ( I have to get a new one since the one they sent me had a freakin chunk missing in the cornor).

The bumper strips overall are arnt that fadded at all, but a while ago my mother used some black paint (same paint that she used on the paint of the car) to cover up some scratces or something. So the surface is raised and looks like shit. I took a heat gun and started scarping off the stuff. Most of it came of but the surface still wasnt smooth, plus I burned some of the plastic in one spot, which looks like shit. I started sanding the one side but the sandpaper scratches are still there. The other side wasnt as bad so I just used some paint thinner and its almost gone, might need some sanding.

My question is Should I use primper to smooth out the surface all the way, sand that down a little, and then use some SEM spray paint over top of that?

    Thanks

Honestly I would get new ones. I dont think they cost much. Mine were painted but the primer was grey and obviously it chipped a lot which left a bunch of grey marks everywhere. They are also extremely flexible so paint would be able to chip easily. But i would get new ones.

I have mine still, plus black diving boards and all the trim painted black. I will have to see if anyone is interested in something like that.

in the meantime you can try shoe polish, i think lots of people use that.

Back to Black is like wax, it doesn't build up and get raised or anything after you buff it off.

      Just buy new pieces.

I'll probably end up doing it, but Im already respaying all the other trim peices so I might as well try. Plus my dad might beable to get some chip resistent Primer from work, if it sticks to plastic.

Bavarian.com is pretty expensive at 30 per piece, any other place I should look?

back to black is garbage. it lasts about a day and tends to look splotchy, especially if it's hot outside when you put it on. I would probably try painting them with some SEM trim paint first, even if it does chip off it will still be black underneath and it will look like it's new.

They would be great and all but it has been painted before with a paint brush so I scraped/sanded most of it off. If i just spraypaint them then you will see the scratches threw it, plus the surface isnt 100% smooth.

any good OEM parts site I should look at ?

They're about $30 a piece on BMA with the discount, which is probably the cheapest you're gonna find. It's worth it though, faded bumper strips look horrendous and new ones look better than painted ones.

while you're at it you might as well get the euro bumper trim (without sidemarkers). I prefer it, anyway, and it doesnt cost any more.

to get the discount, use the coupon code specE30

To remove properly (with the least damage), remove your bumper and then pop the pieces out by pushing the tabs down from the inside of the bumper.

To remove it the fast/i dont give a shit about this trim way, pull them. hard. watch out on the rear bumper, though (or is it the front?), because it has a little nut that hold the trim on each side.

No, BMA. Click the banner at the top of the page or go to www.bmaparts.com

most of us don't take too kindly to bavauto 'round these parts.

funny, because bavauto is cheaper than bma for quite a few parts. *shrug*

(at least, parts that I need, like ix control arms. lets just say I could replace the control arms on a normal E30 2.5 times for the cost of one ix replacement )
