Sedans/Coupes have levers to hold up the lid - youll see metail lines going across from one side to the other. In the convertible, the roof storage area protrudes into the trunk and there is no room for it so struts must be used.

        rear shocks

yes, some have two and some have one shock in the cabrios(think it's like '89). What you or p/o can do mistakenly is replace with the wrong shock part number. If done, it'll push the top higher up on the one side(but can also be misaligned). Alot of replacement shops only carry the double shock for the E30s which is taller and not the correct part. The single shock is much more expensive too.

As for taking the shock off and running without..no good. The other E30s are different, they have torsion springs in the rear trunk hinge to lift. The cars with a stock spoiler "is/es/m-tech" have stronger torsion springs which is a retrofit/upgrade some do to aid their trunks with no shocks. That's why those who add a rear spoiler/wing will often have a weight problem keeping lifted.

Maybe we can figure why some have one and some have two. Lets compile a list of our cars and see which years are what.

My 1987 325i cabrio has one.

There used to be a sight like e30cabrio.com or something that had a crapload of info and specific months/years for specific changes.

            *edit* it's http://www.e30ic.com

the ETK show 4/89, but that seems to be wrong as my cabrio was produced right before then and I have one shock.
